Do you like top tier?

I’m just wondering how many people actually like top tier because almost everyone i’ve talked to has said they don’t like it.

I want to but I can’t. There’s just so many problems with so many aspects of the game at high and top BRs.

EDIT: This applies to Ground RB.

My air isn’t really there yet, highest I have bought and crewed is 8.7. And my Naval is at about 6.3.

Air… Yes-ish… Though the issue isnt the gameplay, I actually quite enjoy BVR in ARB/ASB. But rather that top tier is a buggy mess and the maps are too small. ASB also needs a total overhaul, there just isnt enough content for top tier aircraft and shooting down F-86 sabres is downright wierd

Ground… No. Part of that is down to my only ground nation basically having nothing at top tier, but also the compression is just insane. You have at least 1 full BR worth vehicles (if not more like 2) at the same BR. The maps are also really bad.

Bluewater… I want to like it, but they screwed up the balance really badly. Soyuz wins, always. So if you arent in Soyuz. Every match is a full uptier. Real shame, was so close to being a perfect naval update withwise of new vehicles.

Coastal… Not gotten there yet

I mostly despise playing 14.0 because it is for people who can’t go more than 1 minute without constant overwhelming action.

Sim isn’t much better because it’s impossible to play if you don’t abuse multipathing, and that’s not including the poor reward system and buggy-ness of the game.

Personally I don’t, it’s because offer little fun gameplay, requires little skill and the team interaction is terrible, something that lacks in the game overall however more noticeable at higher tiers regardless of the gamemode, something that needs to be improved by tomorrow but I doubt Gaijin, someone and even me that I’m complaining could find a good answer to this problem.

Reason why I tend to prefer lower tier premium vehicles to: have a productive playthrough (rewards in this case); don’t face low skilled players that just buy their way to the top. However, blaming on the players is fairly, certainly wrong, that’s why I’ll blame the ability to just buy the way to the top, putting on the line the ‘fun’ both for newer and older players that do prefer higher tiers.

Do I like top tier?

No. Not at all. I despise top tier air and ground and I don’t bother much with naval. You couldn’t even pay me to like top tier.

I enjoy them both for air and ground (naval doesn’t exist as far as im concerned anymore).

Things im not a big fan of in ground is the small maps, short game times caused by no expectation on players to stay in a match, and too much emphasis on things like map knowledge (my enjoyment is almost directly tied to whether I know how to play a map or not) and almost no teamwork etc.

For air kinda the same story, matches are too short, if you play it safe and try to take smaller fights it wont be long before the match becomes too much of a numbers disadvantage one way or the other and you are either hunted down like a dog or fighting your team for the 1-2 kills left.

Both suffer from some of the worst compression issue on the game atm, 11.7-12.0 ground is a bit of a joke, 12.7-14.0 air is bad as well, can be avoided just playing stuff that actually belongs at the BR its at though, a bit disappointing if you are a fan of certain vehicles.

Stopped playing them about a year ago due to CAS spam, and recently decided to try them again after the addition of more powerful SPAAs, I’d say if you are here to play ground vehicles, give them another try because now it’s bearable.

Yes and no, top tier GRB is very bipolar.

No. I’ve been playing for over 10 years now, before tanks or botes were even added. I pretty much do not enjoy playing anything over 10.0/10.3 BR [Battle Rating] ground/air. And I do not like playing Naval at all anymore since they ruined Naval Arcade aiming.

I will occasionally play up to 10.3 BR ground, but above that you can (will) be uptiered into 11.7 BR ground, which is effectively top tier (GRB does go up to “12.7/13.0” because of CAS) but 11.7 is high enough to not be enjoyable for me, the majority of the time.

And for air, occasional max is 11.7, and that is pushing it. You get up into the F-18’s in up-tiers. Not to mention the F-4S spam, and I have the F-4S and get sick of the missile spam. So, to avoid the majority of the missile spam (F-4S), you have to stay equal to or less than 10.3 Arcade/10.7 Realistic.

TL;DR: BR matters; “rank/tier” doesn’t do anything for matchmaking (why I always talk in terms of BR, not “tier”.) I do not much enjoy playing above ~10.0 BR Air/Ground.

EDIT: So, just in case you are considering a “top tier” premium vehicle, I would instead advise getting premium time when it goes on sale for 50% off, happens twice a year. You can get 180 days of prem time on the web store for $20. A little cheaper to get a full year with GE’s in game, but not a huge difference. Next 50% sale is Anniversary Sale, end of Oct./beginning of Nov.

IF you also want to get a premium vehicle to use with premium time, imo and many other’s opinion, there are some much more enjoyable premium vehicles a notch or two below the “top tier” ones. Cheaper, more fun, and will let you learn how to play more effectively rather than throwing yourself into the top tier furball without knowing wtf you’re doing 😉

I consider 13.0-14.0 as top tier Air , because even in 13.0 you play 14.0 matches.
So , i will say no.
Everything feels half finished, the radar bug is not fixed here and an eternity now , they cherry pick balance and their artificial balance is crap anyway . Stock grind is more crap than before because you can’t even go for GTs , while you play less than half than the plane’s capabilities for A-A. In previous tier - BR range, at least you can somewhat get rid of the stock grind fast.
But the worst thing are the bugs, especially with the TWS… i know you can reset etc. , the thing is those are precious seconds and a party killer. After the 5th time i’m like quit playing everything around it.

Ground i don’t have top tier (i’m at 9 something ) but i don’t like ground that much and i play only for tasks/events anyway.

Navy i just want to play destroyers/frigates… light cruiser maximum. So i don’t bother either.

Another reason i’m not so interested in playing Top Tier in Navy and Ground is…I can read/see videos etc. … It’s as half-assed as air or even worse (Air TT is Open BETA , Navy and Ground are Closed BETA quality) .
I can ofc play all the vehicles after they fix them, there is no rush.
That’s what i’ve learned in this game from 2013 , you don’t miss something not playing top tier except sanity and nerdraging from bugs.

Everything is extremely fast-paced and intense from a gameplay standpoint.

One small, minor thing.

Whether it is a mistake, miscalculation or RNG…

Missing crew skills or a needed essential modification.

I can’t possibly list them all:

For tanks: Whether it’s better quality thermal sights, having top-penning APFSDS rounds, the armour layout/design/weakspots of your MBT, autoloader speed or overall mobility of your vehicle.

For jets: Having a detailed RWR that can tell which missile or jet is tracking or coming at you, having the best and most powerful radar, correctly deploying and having enough countermeasures at the right time to fool and deal with certain missiles at top tier, utilizing the missiles with their pros and cons vs other missiles, (Ex, at BVR or close range).

There are so many things to simply apply and know, then work with to the best of your ability.

Which, for some players, can be too much and frustrating to play.

Not to mention, there are other elements of top-tier gameplay, such as CAS or map design, premium low-level players, which can undoubtedly add to the pain of top-tier as well.

I mean, I say I don’t like it, but what I really mean is that Gaijin/War Thunder has provided me better options (battle ratings) and I would rather invest my time playing those instead. I don’t seem to have the big interest in modern/new military hardware as some folks here. I’m most at home with WW2 - early Cold War.

A lot of unhappy people here. For me top tier ground and top tier air is fun.

For ground?

I like the dynamic of top tier gameplay. I love playing IFVs and helicopters. I like the high octane gameplay of top tier MBTs due to their mobility and low reaction time. Its definetively change of pace.

BUT

I havent touched anything above 10.7 for along time until addition of SLM, unironically due to Kh-38MTs. These absolutely killed any possible enjoyment I had because there was no counter other than the infamous “spawn a plane”.

Played few games recently with SLM and what do you know, I had fun. Not randomly exploding 5 minutes into the match really does make the game playable.

Of course it isnt perfect, we need maps that match the top tier MBTs mobility and ability to accurately land a shot at distance, but trend seems to be the exact opposite, god only knows why. My guess is to appease new players who bought their way into top tier and have only one vehicle and the time they survive for is counted in seconds. But who knows.

For air?

Absolutely. People (mostly those who wish for gun only mode replacing normal ARB or those calling for multipath to go back to like 100m) say that missile gameplay is skillless because you just launch a missile and get a kill. But if thats true, doesnt defeating a missile thats guaranteed kill require actual skill?

On top of that missiles are great equalizer of airframes. Whenever I play air RB at prop tiers, game feels like spreadsheet check. Like i see an enemy and can only decide to engage him if i have better plane than him - otherwise im dead after merge. On top of that it feels like im fighting uptier 100% of the time im in prop. With missiles uptiers arent so bad, excluding the uptiers of 12.7 to 13.7. Being uptiered in KWS to 14.0 sucks but i know i still have a fighting chance and can contribute to the game, even if i will die if single 14.0 enemy decides to merge.

for me, toptier GRB is not fun.
having the victory depending on which major nation you’re teamed up with makes the experience worst, as no matter what i do, i cant turn the tide of the battle.

Gl winning if you have US on your team, as your teammates WILL leave after 2 deaths.
Gl winning without the protection of the irst on your team as youll be cas’d to oblivion.
Gl winning with the su30 + su24 duo killing all your teammates in one pass.
Bonus points if any of the big 3 are teamed up with germany against you.

It seems that sticking to 12.0 and 11.7 makes the experience alot more fun as 13.0 is just not it atm

i dont care if i win or not
i care about shooting things and killing them and this is the fun
i dont pay attention to who leaves or who does not couldnt care less

Yes and no. I do enjoy playing all the cool top tier vehicles, but top tier air and ground both have some serious problems that I would like to see fixed.
