The thing about this angle that I find quite funny is that most missiles (and thus missile ships) won’t be able to actually deal with battleships.
Ships cannot be mission killed in game, and large HE warheads do very little damage to the armour we see at 8.7.
The “paper” route I find more plausible. But that’s going to open a door to questionable gun performance, shell stats, and internal module layout. Especially if the bound for what counts as a proper “paper” design aren’t defined.
In its extremes, Kaneda’s 500kt monstrocity could be a valid paper design.
I’m not too doom and gloom about what might happen, but I suspect it might be a pretty bold choice.
US, Japanese and USSR ships will still be better than the rest (The 2 first because they prioritized their navies and could come up with bigger designs, even paper ones, the last one because Sovetsky Soyuz)
So we’ll end up with the same balancing issues, except instead of having real and iconic battleships being somewhat on top (except for Soyuz, which isn’t iconic), it will be paper designs
Well said. Instead of Iowa-Yamato, we’ll have Montana-A150 but it basically will be the same thing.
Beyond that, what I find annoying with the decision to go full paper ships is that it rewards overly optimistic, unreasonable (even perhaps state propaganda) ship concepts that would most likely never have seen the light of day, (not in their ideal form anyway), to the detriment of nations with a certain experience in ship building, that approached their future warships with a much more rational, cool headed logic.
Very few nations had the means to think big, and if we can reasonably assume a Montana could have been built according to specs, nothing is less sure with some other designs, most notably ones that involve untested weapons, absurd armor thickness, insane reloads, etc.
Tbf that kinda sth we are heading to in all aspect of the game right now, when it comes to balancing. Because of the nature of the game itself, you know realism and stuff like that. For example British tanks will never be equal compared to the Leopards and there is nothing one can do.
Same thing will happen to naval as well, regardless of if you add paper ships or only real designs. Tho you are right, with paper ships the difference in power will be way more exaggerated
I mean the issue is : nobody seems to put back in question whever or not every single tree needs something at the top of the top in terms of Br.
Weaponry development is rarely trying to create an equal, but rather get something superior to your opponent. So it makes sense that it is never balanced.
In most trees, though, i’d say the difference won’t be that important, but more importantly, so long as there is something more modern to add (ships, tanks or planes) there’s no reason to try to equalize immediately, and if it’s needed, i’d much rather use copy paste when it’s really necessary rather than paper things, which may just increase the problem.
For Battleships, while missile ships may not be able to inflict that much damage to any kind of armored ship, i’m pretty sure the meta these ships are going to play into is going to be a nightmare for any battleship players. Air will probably be filled with missiles (repair + fire simulator) and waters with guided torpedoes left, right and center
We wanted to provide an update with some hints we dropped last week about things still in development regarding naval for France. Vehicle development and planning is always something that can have challenges and changes right up to the release of a vehicle. When we provide answers, we do so with the very latest updates possible to provide you. However, it should always be noted that they can change. In those instances, we always try to be clear and honest about that.
Jean Bart will indeed be the only French Naval vessel this major update now. However there are other more advanced naval vessels we have in future plans, just not something that is ready to show anytime soon now.
Just out of curiosity, what was the reason for the switch up? A mistake in the information you received? The vehicle not being ready for this specific update? Or a short term change of plan?
So gaijin is undertiering the premium version to justify its addition?
Less crew is not some massive downside and a 12% faster reload is far more valuable than anything else.
That survivability really only matters if you are being focused down over the duration of a match which anyone who plays battleships knows is much more rare than a slugging match veing decided by a hit to a shell room, which addition crew will do nothing for and increased shells downrange per minute is far more valuable.
So in exchange for being slightly squishier the premium version with a faster reload gets a lower BR which means it has a chance of seeing 7.0s and a greater chance of not getting drug up and facing Soyuz’s?
This is being presented as some downside when this is making the premium variant even better than it’s tech tree version than it already stands.
And besides, that no top tier for naval genie left the bottle long ago, I remember when top tier was 5.7 and then 6.0 when they shifted the cruisers up, I remember how every top tier cruiser had a top tier sister ship premium, and now it matters?
To this day coastal also 4 max BR premiums, two are old event vehicles, two are for sale and can be bought by anyone.
US coastal top BR 4.0, USS Douglas, 4.0.
German coastal max BR 4.7, Lubeck 4.7
British coastalax BR 4.3, LE Orla 4.3
Italy 4.7, Freccia 4.7.
But a premium battleship gets a lower BR?
Putting a premium sister with a better reload at a lower BR is worse than putting it right next to its tech tree version.
I guess I was looking at it from the angle of being the same BR of the top tier French.
If the end of the line French battleship is a rank VII 8.3 and they add a premium rank VII 8.3 they can point at how a couple other nations have 8.7s and Japan has Nagato at 8.3 but in the end France doesn’t have 8.7 so they still added a max rank max BR vehicle to the French tree that is superior for the types of engagements we fight to the tech tree version.
Oh I agree, it’s super lame that they lock the penultimate French BB behind a paywall but have you considered that Gaijin is a small indie company that desperately needs the money?/s
I’m gonna be so pissed if Gaijin announces the Tirpitz as a premium…
