Deep-Wading Equipment for Tanks

I recently watched The Tank (Der Tiger) and found out that the Tiger could drive underwater with special equipment carried on board.

That reminded me of all the times my tanks have drowned in the game. Could we get a mechanic to fit deep-wading equipment with one key, with a progress bar while the crew sets it up?

I think this could make things more interesting. If even the Tiger could do it, modern tanks should have this option too.

Let’s discuss!

Of course, if the tank you’re driving can’t be equipped for deep wading, you’ll have to take the long way around. We should stick to what these tanks could actually do in real life.

Those kinds of things usually take a long time to setup, so pretty out-of-scope for the the game

Plenty of things in the game already go beyond that scope. Do you really think a damaged tank can be repaired in just a few dozen seconds?

They’ve already set that as a restriction for amphibious capabilities, I wouldn’t expect it to change for wading

Should be something similar to the entrenching device, a modification that requires ~30 seconds to deploy

Exactly, that’s what I had in mind. Something like deploying the entrenching device.

Only if other players can shoot it off!

Thats also what this is for on the T-80s:

It attaches to the air intake on the hull to allow fording, faster to set up but less depth.
Fun fact, its off center to ensure the gun isn’t blocking the drivers hatch if things go wrong.
Another fun fact, the Maus was designed to drive across the bottom of rivers as basically no bridges at the time could handle its weight.

There are more optios for the 80s, for deeper crossings

Also has an snorkel for the crew

God, imagine if you were wading your tank through some water, and a guy shoots it off and your crew drown with no way to have saved them.

They have rebreathers

it also required every single gap in the hull for visors and hatches to be sealed. it was so impractical that it wasnt ever really done.

Took a really long time to set up and just as long to put away to become combat capable again that theres no point in having it.

Even better attempts at making tanks amphibious didnt work well, CVRTs floatation screens were a hassle that was abandoned, sherman DD was mostly a failiure, PT-76 and the BMP family are so thinly armoured that light infantry can mince them.

making tanks able to cross rivers and lakes is yet to have an example where the tradeoffs dont ruin another aspect

Probably the M551. Already had the weight restrictions since it had to be air mobile and it used a curtain system for flotation (similar to how the Strv 103 does it, yes it could float)

CVR(T) did what the sheridan did but its significantly lighter so was more practical. CVRT was better overall to the sheridan in the real world

It was still deemed an unreliable, far too situational waste of time so floatation screens were abandoned as a feature rather quick.

Yep, I want underwater wings for my T-55 so I could cross rivers at 50km/h

Just as the idea with bridgelaying vehicles topic (where OP quite literally didnt understand how physics work) few weeks back, im gonna ask you this - on which current warthunder map this would ever come to play?

Name single one. And dont just name a map with a river, name geniunelly a single map where tank being able to cross a river would bring single tactical advantage worth the developmemt effort to implement it and time spent in battle setting it up to justify it.

Normandy, lol, just throw yourself into an ocean and drive towards enemy positions like that:

Also that one desert map near an ocean, I always forget its name. I even once or twice swam in that ocean to the enemy positions.

Anyway, didn’t Gaijin lower the water level on most maps with rivers, so that even swimming vehicles have no gimmick? Why would they add even less useful modification to tanks?

As much as it would be cool. It would also be a massive pain in the arse.

They have removed some vehicles amphibious capabilities because it takes too much effort irl to set it up or something along those lines.

The M163 use to be amphibious.

I’d be ok if they gave a mod that slowed down the tank overall but allowed it to go into the water, or you could hit a button when you reach the water that started a timer for your tank to become amphibious temporarily(it could be 1-2 mins) but I imagine it’s more work then they would want to put into a pretty niche mechanic.
