Depends on the Flare size;
- 4x8 60mm
- 4x16 40mm
Chaffs of 40mm are also possible but you also have the two SPIRALE dispensers.

Thanks.
When you say 4x8 and 4x16 do you mean that 16 ‘packets’ are present per dispenser for a total of 64 packets across all 4 dispensers or are those dimensions?
At maximum you have 64 flares of medium calibre or 32 of large calibre?
And then SPIRALE covers the chaff side of things (although I am aware that the LIR can take chaffs too?
Yea, 4 x 16 a 40mm flare
Yep
that’s not a lot of flares, it’s all the Rafale can get ?
Thanks for explaining. What I could find suggested it shouldn’t be the problem it seems like it is.
@Hannut59267 hopefully in the way Gaijin models it you will only need 1 pop to defeat most threats it seems the LIR 410/411 series has its luminosity and rise-time customised for high intensity and to provide the most effective IR decoy sequence.
I have no idea about the Chaff though thats just something i came across when i tried to research it all myself.
64x 40mm smart Flares and hundreds of Chaff (+ Jammers) is more than enough in an age were dogfights became an unlikely scenario and BVR dominates.
In-game it’s a different story since Gaijin tries to “balance” with unrealistic / overdone multi-path affect on SARH/ARH missiles.
Don’t take it as anything close to the truth but I have also heard that the flares found on the rafale have a shape that kind of ressemble the plane, to kind of defeat threats that search for the shape of the plane
Probably mimicks the engine’s thermal signature, that has been present on most smart flares.
I don’t know much about this and got this while talking to someone that worked on another project at Mart 25 years ago, so I guess you’d be right.
But that would also mean that we could expect the medium and large caliber flares of modern jets such as the rafale to be much more efficient than those found in game currently, right ?
how would these be implemented in-game though? Currently we havve 3 kinds of flares
~26mm (ish) regular CM’s
~50mm (ish) large claiber CM’s
Turbo nerfed and incorrectly modelled BOL flares.
40mm and 60mm seem to straddle the large caliber flares in size.
Any word on if theyre finally gonna fix this MP issue? Every day I see more and more players that want it gone, and quite frankly, its horrendous for balance and gameplay-wise.
There should not be an uncounterable mechanic with no downsides like MP’s current implementation, its effect on the game borders on that of a game exploit/cheat.
Unfortunately I am not aware of changes coming for MP, maybe Smin knows smth.
I tried pinging him about it, but no response, guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
They REALLY need to do something about MP tho. The addition of Fox 3’s are largely irrelevant if they dont, which kind of makes this update a big nothing burger if MP remains the same imo.
They already started removing MP from SPAA and SAMs. I don’t expect MP to be reduced in the update, but it might come at anytime before the end of the year I would guess
Keep in mind they also fire upwards, which tends to be slightly more efficient against rear aspect IR missiles.
Not sure flares will save any one in the era of IIR anyway.
@WreckingAres283 do we have a precise idea on the chaff amount ? is it just over 100 hundreds or 200+ “hundreds” ? X)
The SPIRALE (ICDs) on Rafale are the same as on the Mirage 2000s, each contains 112 packs of Chaff. So we should have e.g. 64x 40mm smart Flares and 224 Chaffs on Rafale.
ok thank you
Im not sure that it will be enough considering new planes will carry more ARH and deadlier Ir missiles in the future.
I dont understand why France didnt adopt BOL pods or at least something similiar.
Probably we will need new type of flare - the smart flare.
Even then if you look at competetors it will be at disadvantage.
For example Gripen can carry enourmous amount of countermeasures and new F-15 models can also do that with BOL Pods, including upcoming F-15C.
Now imagine F-15EX with 22 missiles plus 840CM against Rafale…
