Crew calls out accurate range beyond limits of rangefinder = intentional?

So, I’ve noticed something curious in ground battles: Tank/vehicle crews consistently call out the range to targets, whether I’m actively using the rangefinder or have just marked the target as a scout.

The intriguing part is that the ranges they announce often exceed the maximum range of the visual rangefinder, in older tanks without bespoke rangefinder modifications or modern laser rangefinders.

Additionally, the tank crew will usually finish calling out the range long before your visual rangefinder does, even with the extra callout that comes before the range callout.

Is this a deliberate game mechanic? If so, how can the crew accurately determine distances beyond the limitations of their rangefinder equipment?

While I certainly appreciate this very helpful feature, it does seem odd that the crew’s range estimations are consistently more accurate and faster than the tank’s own rangefinder.

Perhaps some balancing is needed between the two. Alternatively, a more immersive approach might be to have the crew member’s voice trail off after saying “Range,” with the actual range then being delivered simultaneously with the visual indicator.

No idea if they do that, feel like that’s not really fair to those not playing UK/US or happen to understand the language as I sure do not get range callouts I can understand from my Italian or Japanese crews.

Yep, they do it. It’s a choice to play with those languages on, you should try it sometime. Helps me shoot a lot faster sometimes.

I play with English as the crew voice for the same reason, if I’m playing a nation where I don’t understand the numbers.

It’s not a choice.

there is an option in the sound settings to make it so that crew voices is always insert your language here don’t remember what it’s called, but I know you can because i’ve done it

Just another shitty description in the game settings then.

Either way I don’t think the crew should be calling out the range beyond crew skills, and players be forced to use English crew voices for Germany or something to not be disadvantaged.

I would like vice versa to have an option to get general speech in language of the nation I’m currently playing just for better immersion (even better if my teammates chat commands would correlate with nations they are playing).

Subtitles would be a nice addition to the game, GHPC does this for target ID.

I think the crew should not be able to call out the range past the limits of crew skills or the rangefinder installed. It’s just not realistic. I only support this mechanic being in Arcade mode where ranges are available at all times.
The unique need of being able to estimate the range and adjust after shots (on vehicles without rangefinder) was much more interesting than the seemingly random chance of being given a range we have now.

They don’t tell me the range. It always goes something like “Tank! Twelve’o’clock! Range!” and then it ends there.

Huh, for me it then proceeds to give me the range.
