Consolidated PB4Y-1 Liberator

Hello everybody. I’d like to suggest the Consolidated PB4Y-1 Liberator for the US aviation tree in War Thunder. The PB4Y-1 was a navalized version of the B-24 Liberator and served as the direct predecessor to the PB4Y-2 Privateer in the maritime patrol role. It was essentially a standard B-24 adapted for US Navy use, retaining the original configuration and turbosupercharged engines (important for high-altitude bombing in-game). Depending on the production batch, some PB4Y-1s were fitted with the ERCO nose turret, identical to that seen on the Privateer. During World War II, the PB4Y-1 equipped numerous Navy units and conducted anti-submarine and anti-shipping patrols in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

A +1 from me! Would be nice to see this grouped with the PB4Y-2

+1 for all variants

+1, Maritime and Naval aviation is my soft spot; It would be great to have this and more maps with naval targets to hit with it. (maybe with the possibility with depth charges and AI target subs? ;) )

+1 more heavy bombers and Liberators would be greatly appreciated, assuming we get a bomber rework someday :/

How would this compare to the B-24D and PB4Y-2 already in game?

Compared to the B-24D, the PB4Y-1 would have access to naval magnetic mines and increased defensive coverage of the aircraft’s nose if fitted with an ERCO nose turret.

The PB4Y-1 is straight up better than the PB4Y-2 except for the number of MGs in defensive turrets, since the -2 was never fitted with turbosuperchargers, and the -1 retained the turbosuperchargers. So what this means is that the PB4Y-1 would have better flight performance at high altitude.

Interesting, so in game the -1 would act as a sort of upgrade to the -2… Very interesting, would be a cool addition. What BR would it get then (with ERCO turret), 6.0?

Personally, the B-24D in-game is too overtiered imo considering the fact that the B-17G is overall better at lower BR.

Imagine if the BR is being corrected, then the B-24D would go to 5.0, and the PB4Y-1 would go to 5.0 as well. Literally the only new things are the ERCO turret, naval mines, and maybe an option to swap the ball turret for belly sea-search radar. I feel those features don’t warrant an extra BR step.

Alright. Most bombers are overtiered tbh, so…

Aye, but as it stands, it would still go to 5.7 by Gaijin’s standards.

I never understand why the PB4Y-2 had to be made as a Rank III aircraft while the B-24D is a Rank IV aircraft, despite the fact that the PB4Y-2 came later after the B-24D and had access to radar-guided ASM-N-2 Bats irl.

If only the PB4Y-2 had been made as Rank IV, then it would be wonderful to folder it along with the PB4Y-1. However, that’s not our reality. I can only guess it’s more realistic to folder the PB4Y-1 with the B-24D or move all naval bombers into a new line of the US tech tree.

considering a full US air tree would have something like 10 lines worth of content, this is very much possible. But it won’t happen anytime soon because the devs are mostly focused on top tier

-1, bombers are not well suited for the game right now and this is not a significant enough difference from the PB4Y-2 to be worth adding.

Give us the bird cage Lib before any navy-lised/Costal command one.

? Turbosupercharged and unturbosupercharged are significantly different enough. PB4Y-2 is missing its advanced guided weapon.

What do you mean? Is B-24D not the bird cage Lib?

Slight engine changes that won’t significantly affect the BR or gameplay. This is just TT bloat.

The convenient folder is underutilized.

With the sub stuff going on in the files heavy bombers have a very important job in hunting them. They should have the payload meant to kill a sub added or the special bomber with it. At least for future enduring confrontation you have the fuel and payload to destroy a good amount of subs as long as they don’t try to hunt you.

Genuinely WHY would you ever want devs to waste time on this. This would just be a vehicle detracting from the addition of more unique and interesting vehicles in an update. Not everything in the world needs to be added to War Thunder
