Commander pops up when using binoculars

add remote control turrets too, being able to safely use your roof armament without needing to expose a crew member would be interesting.
BUT if you want to reload…

I think it’s fine to keep the unmanned turret and autoloader reloading specifications the same as before. There’s no need to change everything all at once.

If the hatch is open the HE overpressure would get in though so it would nerf some vehicles. Some vehicles also don’t have any commander hatch so something would need to be worked out.

In eras like WWII, it was very common for tank Commanders to expose their heads or upper bodies from the cupola or hatch and use binoculars for observation. At a time when scopes and periscopes were still underdeveloped, this was an extremely effective method. Many tank aces from the Soviet and Germany and USA, other countries have written in their autobiographies about conducting reconnaissance by leaning out of the vehicle.

ironically popping your head out of the tank and commanding that way likely kept everyone alive vs someone that hunkered in. Though I wonder if there could be a degree of survivor bias would be nice to see some data. There are also open tops which where used in direct combat so you where exposed no matter what. There is also reports of snipers taking out tank commanders or airplane strafing so there was risk but even today hunkering in your tank really does lower your perception even with modern cameras.

I’m actually gonna give this a -1 and here is why

Many tanks had rotatable commander optics (first being gundlach periscope from Poland). This is what is currently highlighted in game as the commander optics for many vehicles. I also think it is kinda a waste to model a commander for the minority of vehicles that didn’t have rotatable commander optics (which still had some sort of commander vision, innovative example being on the Char 2C)

Then to balance this implementation all tanks would have to have the commander pop out and that would destroy a LOT of survivability in some tanks.

I’ll give a conditional +1 for pre-war rank 1 tanks

This should be a top priority for the upcoming infantry mode if they intend to implement it permanently.

I’m not sure if there’s an open suggestion for visibly modeling commanders manning externally mounted MGs on enclosed tanks, except for the M18 Hellcat, but that should also be modeled in infantry mode.

so we can run up and drop a Molotov cocktail in the hatch of a M1 Abrams!

clink! or use a flame thrower if your extra evil.

Then again this does bring into question how a CBRN system would work in game as I got a Chem Warfare suggestion in the chamber for when infantry is fully added so rolling up in a tank into a gas cloud with the hatch open is not smart. Dumb question Is it common for Tanks to have gas masks in the inside storage for a situation where you need to expose yourself to such a environment?

Exactly haha.

And if you want to troll try to put a hand grenade or rock up the barrel! Doubt it would work though…

But would be funny!

One thing to add about hatches this should also happen with drivers hatch. If there taken out with the hatch open it should stay open until there replaced or in some situation with other hatches stay open until some count down like 20 or 30 seconds. Would be a great punishment for losing your commander, driver or something else to a sniper for some trooper in infantry mode to exploit the situation.

A open drivers hatch does provide more ability to well drive and in theory can provide more information to the crew. One reason why modern tanks try to improve situational awareness by giving everyone thermal VR helmets and stuff. WarThunder already has a diver view and with infantries Humvees having a cockpit system it could mean there going to evolve the concept. You could get a choice of open hatch driving or closed or just drive though the gunner scope if that’s your thing.

is that a stug in sprocket? if so damn good moddling

Enlisted most likely they got stug with the whole system figured out.

You can also pop out with a gun and use it. I think for a time and maybe still use a Rocket Launcher which is more realistic then you think. But it was insane what would happen

You would also have situation where a Japanese katana sword loving player would run up and cut your poor commander down!

what game is this?

that hud reminds me of a PAL only release on the ps2 called “ww2 tank battles” but if it was made 15 years later

Some MG like USA .50cal was meant to be more or less fired from out side by someone else. With Infantry you should be able to occupy the position as long as the gun works even if its not your tank or its even broken.

I am aware, the m60 didn’t have that though m48s are another ballpark with that though…

meant the Sherman depends on the mount though both have weaknesses

??? Wernt we talking about the m60???
