History
The 6th Wing was created in 1936 by merging the 1st and 4th Wing of the Regia Aeronautica. The Wing fought throughout the North African campaign and also fought during the Italian campaign until after 8 September. The Wing was disbanded towards the end of the Second World War, but in 1951 it was reformed and rearmed with new aircraft supplied by NATO. The Wing is still active and uses Tornado IDS.
The most famous member of the Wing was Giuseppe Cenni, a very famous pilot and ace of fighter planes and diver.
The Coats of Arms
The Wing’s coat of arms represents a grinning red devil with hooked hands, which ironically represented the leader of what became the “Diavoli Rossi” acrobatic team, part of the 6th Wing.
