CMASA BGA (Bombardiere Genio Aeronautico).

History.

The CMASA BGA (Bombardiere Genio Aeronautico) was the response of CMASA, part of the Fiat group, to a ministerial tender from the Ministry of Aviation for a medium land bomber in 1934. In 1936 the aircraft, called CMASA BGA (or also Fiat BGA ), was registered with the military serial number MM.295 and on 19 April 1938 in Guidonia it made its first flight with the pilot Ezio Guerra at the controls. The aircraft’s performance was not terrible but not excellent either (in the same way as its competitors; in fact almost no one complied with the tender requirements), and this, added to the fact that Fiat had already proposed an aircraft for the competition (the most famous Fiat B.R.20), had the aircraft scrapped for mass production. The plane was made of metal and duralumin with canvas covering, had more than enough armament for defense, and a glass nose for better visibility.

Armaments and propulsion.

The aircraft was armed with three 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns placed in three different positions: one was placed behind the cockpit dorsally, another under the first ventrally and the last one anteriorly in line with the dorsal one. Furthermore, the plane could load up to 1,600 kg of bombs in the hold.
For propulsion, the aircraft was equipped with two Fiat A.80 RC.41 “Nembo” engines with 1,000 hp each located in the wings. With this powerful (for the time) engine, the aircraft could reach a maximum speed of 405 km/h and could reach a ceiling altitude of 8,500 m, with a maximum range of 2,000 km.
