Ch'ŏnma-20 — Crown Jewel of the Korean People's Army

I wanted to say the same, end of topic. Ricochet is ricochet.

There’s a major difference between a ricochet, a non pen, and shell shatter buddy. The angle wasn’t high enough for a ricochet 🤣. Just wanted to say that.

In Tonk we trust

Anyway looking at it from this angle it does remind me of India’s domestic tank which takes East and West. She is likely a good tank from reports they got a whole factory spooled up for her hopefully we see her in game even if we have zero information and Gaijin has to do image math. Who knows maybe if it sucks enough the One North Korean WarThunder player will do a big report on her.

Looks tough. Especially with that long 125mm using one piece ammunition presumably. It’s just the ERA I really don’t trust (even against HEAT). Hope it gets an APS if added to War Thunder.

Looks like T-90M, Abrams, Leclerc, and Altay all had a rough night. Beautiful ending lol.

Less of a neck weak-spot, smaller, 125mm cannon using 1 piece ammo which doesn’t limit penetrator length as much (higher dmg and pen potential than M256 cannon), better P/W, possibly better ground pressure, lower cost of operation likely, more room to evolve the new design out…

Definitely not Abrooms.

The catch is, the Ch’onma is a 1950s design upscaled and suited up to look like a Modern tank. Looks pretty but that is all it is.

any proof? or just personal bias?

We should assume it’s a good tank for what it is example being Brazil was able to build a MBT North Korea with there heavy industry likely can as well. That does not mean they did not get help or procure vehicles samples from sources or stole tech though differing means. They were also likely more than capable of coming up with their own derivatives of needed tech to get the whole thing to work.

During the Iran Iraq war Iran did give North Korea access to a good chunk of their Western tech they had from before that included British Tank Fire Control. Most likely inspired the fire control in the Chonma-ho & other vehicles but we don’t know for sure.

MBTs are complex machines with many components North Korea is more than likely able to get one going. FYI there building the cruiser ship thing they talked about doing from satellite images there has been construction of support equipment for something big but we see when the keel laying is done.

Considering the Botched disaster that was the NK junk destroyer. I honestly doubt they will ever get a cruiser to work properly as they want. If you can’t even land your ship in the water properly, then don’t bother trying to improve a navy that is still going to be out of date no matter how it seems.

for a country that can build nukes and long range ballistic missiles, close relations to massive tank makers like USSR/Russia and China, continuous flow of captured Western stuff (from Iraq-Iran as you said to this day with the Abrams and i think Leopard too) it is only logical that they are capable of budling/modernize tanks themselves

There is video though for the media of her ripple firing missiles

There is some funny stuff like lots of MG firing from port holes but all things considered a functioning ship. Though her insides are a bit over decorated for a warship and I think that may not be fully real but who knows. There is utility for North Korea to have a ship for even general peacetime as you can use her for port visits and with that do diplomatic talks (this is not a form of Gunboat Diplomacy though it may seem like that people do like friendly naval visits esspecally island nations). Doing these visits can allow you to nibble around USA UN sanctions. So maybe having a warships that a cruise ship designer provided there opinion of interior decorations may have value.

They might be taking a page from China where you book a day show up do some ceremonial stuff a show shake hands and go home.

lol a lot of Ukrainian and other former Soviet nation Scientists and Engineers did go to North Korea to provide assistance because North Korea dumped there GDP into the army just in case USA got an idea in the 90s so these experts could be paid. They also have a whole chemical weapon program which is one reason why no one got any ideas in the 90s NK got the big 4 agents such programs are also complex but do indicate a general expertise in chemical sciences which is needed in other fields.

One thing also Soviet Scientists and other Communist countries give or take did talk to each other and scientists in general do love to talk to each other. So many should assumed would have pen pals. Also funny enough the Swiss and other nations had stands at the Pyongyang International Trade Fair this year so dual use tech can get around which is funny (guess where you are going Matteo! your right your going to Pyongyang to show off our canning tech!).

Shares less common parts than the Abrams does with the M60 “not Patton” (bet ya didn’t know that fun fact ;). The Abrams is 1960s tech.

The cope-ho king!

If 1960 tech works and you don’t have to retool a factory or send the repair crew to school again it’s a positive. Also if you can get parts from the boneyard it’s a another big plus (congress will hug you!)

The satire flew to the moon and right back to earth over your head. Not saying that the Abrams is bad because it takes after “1960 programs”… I said that to say that argument can apply more to what he fan girls about than the NK tank.

Pay attention to the context lol.

lol I think in general people forget how old a lot of our military tech is stuff just gets upgraded until you get to a point where you need a new vehicle. Sometimes you go beyond that if your unlucky like parts of the US Navy

Building new is important. The NK tank in this thread has more room to grow as a design than a Leopard 2 or Abrams (without major changes). That’s objective facts.

To try and dish on it saying it’s “50s tech” with “new paint and coverings” is simply untrue. That applies more to fan favorite tanks of yesterday than it does to that specific tank. There are definitely tanks in NK that you could surmise are cardboard Tigers but this one isn’t it.
