“By fitting Stillbrew, which is made of RARDE 823/Specification 1985 cast steel, the armour thickness at the front increased from about 480mm to 540mm [against contemporary 115mm and 125mm APFSDS].”
That’s the first place that I’ve seen the turret armour of the Chieftain quoted as 480mm. The tank museum as previously said it was 15" (~380mm) but in the game, it’s only about 220-260mm on the gunner/commander side (depending on depression) against 115mm 3BM4 (280-315mm LoS).
I wonder if this is a typo in the book and they meant 380mm? That would also make more sense for Stillbrew to add 160mm of protection, not just 60mm.
Even so, if it is meant to be 380mm, that’s still far more than it is in the game atm and would actually make the Chieftain mk.3 and mk.5 turret competitive again.
I only use the MK10 in maps where I can hull down and camp until the earth becomes uninhabitable, never took them out on city maps or anywhere I cannot hide my shitty hull, used to be able to maintain a 4.3 KDR but now it has dropped to 3.5 mark, 70% of my death being bombed by CAS because nobody would pen my composite turret, the thing could take DM13/23 and 3BM22 and even 3BM42 and not die, once your turret crew is dead, you can turn the turret ever so slightly so they accidentally hit somewhere where it would hit your dead commander over and over again and renders the damage useless lol.
It’s certainly possible that there might be an error or also that different points in the armor are looked at, I will have a look when my exams are over (Thursday at the earliest)
