Reasonably simple idea. The Chieftain MK3/MK5 after the BR changes regularly go up against XM1s, T64Bs and other tanks which they stand no chance against. Considering the Chieftain was the first ever tank to field a laser rangefinder surely these tanks should be made the MK3/3 and MK5/L so that they can have laser rangefinders?

Yes why not. There even some variant that got its ammo rack upgrade to store APFSDS round if need be.
The MK5/4 I believe. Honestly though I don’t think it would be a good idea since it would inevitably get them increased in BR. Although changing the MK10 to the MK11 and giving it TOGS should definitely be on the cards.

Oh yep now that i’ve look into it
MK 5 with Laser range finder + APFSDS would at least get it to 9.0 (Where M60A3s , T-62M-1 sit at)
Maybe in the future when Gaijin want to decompress 8.0-9.0 BR even more

If I understand correctly L15A3 is also not the best round we could have. It’d certainly be nice to have something a bit better
It isn’t. You could fire:
L15A5 APDS-T
L23A1 APFSDS
L26A1 APFSDS
L28A1 APFSDS
L28A2 APFSDS
Some of which defeat russian ERA quite easily. You won’t be getting these by the way, too risky towards russian vehicles.

Yes, but I would need to see what is and is not public knowledge before I speak on it.
The MK5 and Mk10 both could receive Thermal imaging as well, considering they both were fitted with it while being upgraded through the Totem Pole program.

I have multiple books from the early 80s, Talking about the Chieftains having thermals. BEFORE the Mk11 entered service, which everyone thinks was the first ones to have Thermals.

If the chieftain mk3 and 5 can face t-72s, which they do, then a laser range finder hardly seems like a large ask.

If you could indeed find out what you are allowed to say that’d be pretty nifty. QoL for something like the Chieftain Mk5 or Mk10.
It looks like the TLS and Ruby LRF system was adopted in the Mk 3 around 1975. Here is a picture of the LRF for the Chieftain Mk 3.
