Chieftain Mk.3/5 Help

Been playing my Chieftains (Mk.3 and 5) again. Just as I remember it it’s terrible. Even after switching to medium tank/ centurion doctrine (I used to play it as a heavy) it still suffers.

Literally everything pens it even in downtiers. (In the turret even let alone the hull. Yes, it was designed to stop 100mm which it can’t even do. It does stop tier APHEs but little else. Also doesn’t help the UFP is 50% weaker than it should be historically)
I’ve come baring questions about shells and tanks
-For 7.7BR M48 players, what shell do you main? I’m assuming HEAT but IDK.
-For 8.7 T-62 players, what shell do you main?

Last, does anyone have tips to do better? Cause even though I suck in it generally the performance is very good. To me, its too slow to be a medium, too weak to be heavy, and lacking firepower to snipe. (No LRF combined with 8x zoom) It seems pretty helpless in the iron triangle, none of the 3 aspects are worth the other 2. Its a peak MBT, jack of all trades master of none.

Idk man, I love it, it’s peak.

Basic waffle

You can’t play the Chieftains aggressively,
for the 8.7 chieftains
their guns are extremely potent, dealing with most armour without thought, only T-72s/64s which you only face in an uptier make your gun struggle,

don’t charge headlong into the enemy, wait for them to push you, your Lower Front plate is very poor, and easy to hit, try to hide it as much as possible,

as for the upper front plate, when not angled downwards while hull down, its dependent on the gun, whether or not it pens, while in a hull down position it is rarely penned.

as for the turret, most things shouldn’t be able to pen it, but there are guns that can, but all but the highest performing rounds will need to aim to penetrate,

As for it’s mobility, its poor, and the jump from the mark 3 to the mark 5 is noticeable, [/details]

Yes the Mobility is Poor, yes the hull is weak, its a great tank, the gun is strong, in addition to its relatively strong turret its great

the gun is perfectly fine at range, and 8x zoom is enough to use for all realistic ranges you’ll be sniping at (0.8-1.6km), while yes, they don’t have laser rangefinders, (while there is some that will claim that the Mk.5 should, AFAIK that comes with the Mk.5/2) they have optical rangefinders, which is perfectly fine to use , and accurate enough to use, especially with the APDS, with HESH maybe not so much (but who snipes with HESH?) the Chieftains look like they do poorly, they are in reality great vehicles, but definitely have their own playstyle

having had a look at your replays you didn’t do anything wrong with the tank,

just general gameplay related things, like paying attention to your map, and knowing where to aim (see the TAM and Strv 101 (3 shots to kill while side on?) from the Campania Replay), and listening for enemies, also you don’t need to retake your cap on battle, it does nothing toward winning the match , and try not to overextend away from your team, and why first spawning the Mk.3 when the Mk.5 is just plain better?

also heads up, you don’t need to use your machinegun that much, it gives your position away

the Mk.3 is a lot worse than the Mk.5, (as your stats naturally reflect), also in addition, on the Mk.3 do not use the Dozer blade, it provides next to no protection or benefit and adds nearly 2 ton to the already overweight chieftain (making it 1.5 ton heavier and 100hp short of the Mk.5, rather than slightly lighter and 100hp short)

(I see you bring 22 APDS + 2 HESH, personally i bring 20 APDS and that being it, but there’s nothing wrong with your ammo load)

Their certainly not the most natural tanks to get a hang of, but slap when you do get the hang of them

(my stats to show i'm not talking utter bollocks)

Great for the most part, insane damage and good accuracy. But any T-55AMD-1s or T-62M1s and it really struggles to pen them. (On top of you not being able to stop even the base model’s rounds)

Have to strongly disagree with this. Actual 7.7s can pen it (Those that have HEAT) and all 100 and 105mm APDS. It easily gets penned in a downtier let alone at tier T-62s or uptier.

It really struggles to snipe past 1500m. My benchmark is 2.2km which weaker gunned 8.3s can do. Higher BR tank should at least be able to match. Just 8x with rangefinder, feels like a downgrade from the 8.3s and sidegrade from the 2 wheely 8.7s.

Yes this is thunderskill and could be very different but the Mk.3 and Mk.5 do very well.

How can you do that?? Just curious.

Was first spawning it cause for some reason its 1km/h faster plus the KD is way worse. (0.84) For whatever reason no matter what spawn order my Mk.3 typically does better than the Mk.5. Currently I’ve chalked it up to the Mk.5 being ‘too fast for its own good.’

I was paying attention to map, no? I even thanked the recon in chat for saving me. To the M60 I died to I was engine off setting up for ambush for the other guy he scouted- When in scope all sounds are muffled; couldn’t hear M60. I was in scope cause at that close range/ for ambushes like that I cannot aim in 3rd person, like I’ll totally miss. (Or at least not kill.)

As for the TAM I was trying to hit the bustle ammo the first shot, but I have a massive skill issue with hitting moving targets with APDS in the chieftain. (I can literally hit moving targets with 105mm APDS from almost 8.5x the distance.)

For Strv 101 First shot I was already expecting him to have died, same with 2nd shot. Third shot I was expecting his gunner to have replaced and him to die cause he had 2 crew at that point.

Then how does one up the W/R? Those on thunderskill are way higher than mine.

I destroy stuff in the way of me because it slows my already slow ahh tank down.

It’s only really cause I played it first and didn’t actually have or play the Mk.5 till around the time I’d gotten the Challenger 2. (So like ~8 months between Mk.3 and Mk.5)

Just like on Bhishma TWMP, it saves me. From HEAT and KE it works wonders. Doesn’t matter how mobile I am if I’m dead.

Happened just now. This being said, I’m not, and never am, relying on it to do so. I don’t act because I have it, (relying on it) I act after it. (Like when it does work. In this exact case: I shot, backing up his commander shoots this shot, then I finish up.)
I think this is a key lesson for everyone at any BR.

  1. Don’t rely on armor.
  2. Act after/ if the armor works not because you have armor
    Dozer Save.blk (2.2 KB)

i don’t usually have much issue penning them, there are massive weakspots and the hull protection is still poor
and they pen you because they fire APFSDS (3BM25) (which can still only pen certain parts of the turret)

what thing without Composite/ERA can stop HEAT? not many/any that don’t have weird gubbins happening

not everywhere in the turret, being able to stop it in places is better than stopping it nowhere, and many don’t know where they need to shoot

that was a typo, i meant to say “Look like they’d do poorly”, which is clear when you take the whole quote

add done here: Gaijin Entertainment - Single Sign On

much slower in reality, in mph (what i use) it goes from 29.9mph (Mk.5) to 30mph (Mk.3), in addition i believe they didn’t fix the gear ratios of the Mk.3 when they increased its top speed from 25mph to 30mph, which makes its top end acceleration so poor you’ll only see 30mph going downhill

supporting team movements, capping points (Domination + Conquest as they add ticket bleed, Unlike battle)

small shrubs don’t slow the chieftain down, and doing that while on the opponents side / centre of the map is just asking for trouble

its a straight fact, same armour, and gun, but one has a max HP/T of 12.1(11.7 w/dozer) and the other has a HP/T of 13.8
(for reference Tiger E is 12.2)

I’d personally rather the mobility, while yes (As you’ve shown) it can save you, the chieftain is already a fat pig of a tank, an extra 2 ton isn’t helping that, in addition to 95% of the shots you’re gonna take are not of the specific set that it protects against

Yeah I am gunna skill issue myself on most of this. As for being penned maybe it just feels like it happens more often than it does; perhaps because I rarely even get shot most of the game; those that do are the ones that pen. Or it could be my lobbies are sweaty (I’m not saying this as an excuse, I’ve had people I’ve played with/ watched me play say this) and do know where to aim.

As for the HP/t it was a bigger map and mostly downhill with larger open spaces for acceleration; that’s why I first spawned it on that map.

You’ve really gone above and beyond in your help here, thank you! Thank you so much for all this.

Yeah lol I just obliterated a bunch of dudes from 1.5-2.0 km away. Any tank can do it eventually, it just takes patience and practicing to make perfect. (6 kill Maginot line server replay if you wanna see)

Maginot is the closest to a perfect map i think we’ll get in this game

Urban slop if you wish for it

wide flanking if you’re up for it

long range sniping if you wish for it

and a competent mix in the middle of the map

not perfect in every way (spawn camping is fairly easy to do (north spawn has a massive hill in between spawns that can see both and isn’t on the spawn radar last time i checked, and every spawn has an area looking into it that has cover for the spawn campers, apart from that its a good map)

yeah, the sights are good enough until then, but good luck getting any longer range than that in warthunder maps these days, and the gun is plenty well at those distances for the most part, L15 is a very good shell (gaijin why can’t we have L15A5 (chieftains primary service round, is on the FV4030/3) over the L15A3 we currently have

I have no problem with my Mk.3

Yeah unfortunately that’s just about the longest line of sight on any map. Big sad especially considering the Chieftain outranges its contemporaries; it outpens them at range. They cant even pen me with side angle (Easier to pen turret when its not square on) at 1.6KM when L15 goes through UFP with 40 degree side angle at 2KM. (IRL it was designed to destroy T55/62s at “Long a range as possible.”)

The 4030/3’s L15A5 has the exact same performance as L15A3- only different name.

While i understand that, iirc L15A5 was able to go through a T-72A(?) at 1000m (?) or so, or atleast be able to pen the T-72A Upper front plate, a thing that not even (the fake)L23 APFSDS can do (L23A1 can, and it also depends if it has the extra 16mm plate, with it L23 fails at all ranges, rather than is unreliable as with without it), there should be a difference but there isn’t (or maybe the differences don’t matter much/aren’t modelled in game, idk)

though one of the guys from a discord server i’m in can fact check me on that one (about L15, not L23)

Actually it was not; that’s why the L23A1 was developed.

It should be noted that the ural UFP is different from the A models (A model is 60 RHA, 100 textolite, 50 RHA) but from what I’ve read about chieftain (I’m a huge british tank nerd, not to brag) no APDS from chieftain could pen T72 UFPs.

Actually it can, at very high range

The extra 16mm plate does make it impenetrable to L23, that’s when L23A1 comes in. But in reality I never need to, I get a side, idler, LFP, or driver shot. (Through the UFP is hard to kill anyway with L23 or L23A1, there’s no point risking it when there’s easier, more reliable shots to take.)

WDYM difference?

In fact the Mk.3 has a Dozer blade it keeps my tank and other tankers safe.
