Background
Spoiler
The primary objective behind the development of the J-7IIM was to evaluate the capabilities of the PL-8 missile. Its technical specifications are largely aligned with those of the J-7M intended for export. Nevertheless, to better suit domestic operational requirements, the J-7IIM has undergone significant modifications based on the J-7M design.
The inner wing pylons are capable of accommodating PL-2B, PL-5B, PL-8, and PL-7 missiles. Additionally, a head-up display (HUD) has been integrated to provide ballistic parameters for the PL-8 missile and to indicate the missile’s tail-chasing attack zone.
The original WP-7 engine, which featured dual-channel ignition and mechanisms to prevent automatic nozzle enlargement, has been upgraded to the WP-7B variant. The ejection seat system retains the life-saving indicators from the J-7II model, operational at zero altitude, 250 km/h (low speed), and 850 km/h (high speed). The identification system for friend-or-foe continues to utilize the YD-3 type.
Due to the integration of the PL-8 missile, adjustments have been made to the aircraft’s center of gravity, resulting in altered flight characteristics. A total of four J-7IM aircraft had been modified in accordance with the specifications set forth by the Chinese Air Force.
