Chengdu J-10, History, Performance & Discussion

PL-21 a beefed up version of the PL-17 iirc, anyway they are anti-AWACS missiles, PL-15s are going to be better against fighter size targets

PL-21 was a competitor to PL-17 in PLAAF’s ULRAAM project, lost out to PL-17 because they prefer traditional rocket motor over ramjet

What could be the Channel loss on the J10C?

Well I mean this needs to be completely consistent with what the russians have, they get double pylon R77s on jets never seen with them, and the only thing they can say is nothing forbids them to carry two more R77s.

No one knows. No open info even includes the existence of PL-17.

Depends heavily on modelling, since enough is changed between J-10A and C that no one can tell. In theory DSI should offer just as good if not better supersonic performance. I would have the heaviest worry on the drag, since if not for drag J-10A will be far faster than what it is now.

Is there any way to report the drag on the J10 airframe?

None that I am aware of, since it is next to impossible to have any sort of solid flight performance from official sources.

8x pl-15 menace 🤤 pl-15 first arh missiles with 2 way datalink gps etc… gonna be a slightly slower r-27er but with much more range due to dual pulse. Cannot wait

Makes me wonder, if Snail is willing (depending on how real/accurate the leak is) to add PL-15… does this means they’re actually considering R-37M?

If modeled correctly, it’s actually not slower than the R-27ER. By comparing the wreckage and models of the PL-15 with PL-12, its total impulse can be estimated at around 200 kN·s. Assuming a specific impulse of 2400 m/s, the calculated delta-V would be 2400 × ln(210 / (210 - 200000 / 2400)) = 1213 m/s, which is greater than the R-27ER’s 1076 m/s.

Theoretically, in WT, the R-37M could have better performance due to higher energy. But that’s just my guess since the R-37’s significant drag is also a problem.
Anyway, it should come with the PL-17 and AIM-174 or AMRAAM-ER.
For the PL-15, it will be the R-77M (it’s lucky they just finished developing and testing it).
P.S. Some close sourcer indicates that the missile is tested in proving ground in Northwest China secretly, and maybe further help is provided to build it.

ground launched weapon

should be basically the same sytuation with the su-27sm and su-30sm we have in game, no in service russian plane had the double belly rack that gives 4 missiles instead of 2 (of those 2 specified version of plane) but since it can in theory have em it got em in game, watch gaijin not add it to the j-10 anyway because it’s not russian tho…

Wait I’m dumb, you’re talking about those 2 plane specifically, if so ya true

was already going smh but happy we all understood what i meant

To be fair tho Su-27SM got double racks as “compensation” for poor performance soon after it was added and before general Su-27 (+ clones) FM improvements

Why Su-30SM have double racks is everyone’s guess (by inertia or they have plans for much stronger enemies and thus 30SM must take a role of the missile buss (add to this not best flying performance thanks yo subpar TVC))

Now, on the question of double rack underbelly for J-10C. Personally I see chances quite high - J-10 can’t carry many missiles by itself and so have the need to compensate it either by quality and/or quantity. With how arcady gameplay of WT is I think it will go by “quantity” merit

I would consider 6 missiles enough, wouldn’t mind two more, but I would say the biggest hinderance is still flight performance, no matter how much of a missile bus for example the hornet is it is far from even good.

Bold of you to assume that Gaijin aren’t going to give it the C5 treatment.

Unlike aim120c5 we at least have hard stats for it in its export form, so we know its dual pulse and at least 145km range with aesa seekerhead

AIM-174 is also NAVY weapon. anyway, they are also testing it in Hornet
personally I prefer this than AIM-174, 174 is too big and not so suitable for air launch

I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time Gaijin has outright denied reality either though.
Anyways, I do hope that Gaijin doesn’t bork it though, as I would love to have fun with a full power Pl-15.
