almost like ww2 doesn’t use war thunder damage models…
According to Gajins devblog they used old photographs and reports to overhaul the damage system. So I’d assume they tried to do it as close as possible to RL.
Either that or Gajin fell victim of survivor bias.
Gaijin and “close to real life” are known contradictories.
I think it’s likely. If API .50 were so good at killing bombers, why do 1. all major airforces switch to cannons in the cold war and 2. Almost all gun/rocket based bomber killer weapons all high explosive?
Even just looking at the MiG-15 (principal soviet early cold war fighter/interceptor) should give a hint. The massive 37mm is there to kill bombers and what rounds does it use for air targets?

That’s right, high explosive.
right now the meta is to use a bomber instead lol
be as strategic as you want, my gunners are holding m1 and you’ll die eventually
such skillful gameplay
skill issue tbh
The Me 410 with 2 x MK 103 was pretty effective. Attacking from the front or the beam, never from the tail. I scored two pilot snipes on the first run.

Bombers are so hard to kill guys oh my god they’re op lmao
You can try it using German shooting range with early targets. There is a formation of B-29 bombers which don’t shot back. You can perfectly study the new damage system with those.
Its not possible to shot them down with 20mm guns and mine shells. At least not in a direct way. They keep flying and burning and they’ll never break. The engine fires don’t kill them either. They burn indefinetly. They will eventially go down when the lose all thrust. Takes ages.
When you take P-47 with Ground or Tracer belt … ofc they also tank alot. But the fires seems to bring them down. They burn in a more lethal way. You also have alot more ammo. So your 200 mine shells will be often used without getting a direct kill. Unlike a few hundret cal50, which seem to give you a kill.
This is in my eyes a really good change, you can finally fly with a bomber for more than 5 minutes in a game, for a fighter it requires way more strategy and precision to destroy one and that’s really good.
Before that, just aiming at the center mass of the bomber and in a second the bomber is gone; now it requires some aim capabilities for shooting the cockpit or engine. That’s why everyone is crying, because it’s not as easy anymore.
Tho I agree on the fact that a bomber can absorb A LOT of missile and that’s really OP, otherwise it’s really balanced.
After playing some matches I can safely say bomber do NOT need the air spawn anymore. Interceptors like the Do 217 are completely unable to get them which makes them unable to do their job.
Oh, so like irl, neat
Or maybe it’s the other way around. Interceptors need a higher airspawn.
Also if bombers were so survivable why did they devolve into cardboard garbage which, according to war thunder, falls apart like lego? What is the point of su34, su24m, f111 etc? Are designers stupid?
'Hey grok, where should i shoot bombers and why shouldnt i sit behind it and shoot the fuselage cause its easier?"
mfw the clanker is smarter than the average player… despite it thinking THIS is an he111 lol
Is this normal? i was burning, got all engines down, oil leak, no controls, the bomber didn’t got any more damage, just the engine burn looks like but no fuel leak, and it wasn’t getting low, infact as you can see, look perfectly, but then from where was the fire continuing? and why it didn’t broke apart my plane, was the irl arado this strong? i remember that his role was a reconnaissance aircraft, that’s my question, or just because it’s a bomber got stronger airframe?
Thats a very dead bomber, probably counted as severe damage anyway
Also, how exactly would fire spread from engines with fuel cutoff on a metal aircraft
I think a big issue is that fuel tanks just won’t catch alight. They need to fix that.
But in general. I noticed with the bomber buff, I had a points increase, specifically when grinding the F-16XL. I wasn’t flying bombers, I was flying the P-47.
What I notice is that the meta has changed where bombers can work synergistically with fighters by being a moving turret platform meanwhile fighters clean up one another. Bombers can absorb fire while Fighters can move in for the kill.
I notice that when I get B-26 and B-25 players to work with me, we usually turn out better.
Neat that bombers can have a more active role.
But overall, there needs to be tweaks still to bombers and overall a new look at weaponry. Specifically incendiary.
i was burning for 3 minutes more until i Jout because i was bored, the damage is got was for a 12.7mm from a B-29, the fire got all 4 engines, the plane was dead, right but that long for a plane that wasn’t really a bomber, in the other hand, that B-29 i shoot 20mm rounds (APHE with HE) in his engine and got it burn, well it just put out the fire 40 seconds later, no spread of it
The other point, you are right, it is a metal aircraft, most of them at that Br are of metal and wings ripoff for the fire (except Yak-3 they just stop the fire even by being of wood, but, whatever) so should they have a bigger resistance too to fire and how they spread? Do 335 for example, it easy to break, easy to burn, not for bigger caliber, just 12.7mm, Me 262, the same, P-51, even being fighters they are of metal
I do think the bomber should be robust for defending them self, but when the talk about “More than 60% of losses in actual combat were caused by fires in the fuel and oil systems rather than structural failure.” then why burning them doesn’t destroy them has it should?
Because the fires arent causing structural failures WT style, see, bombers IRL had to fly HOURS home damaged, and crews had a will to live, so theyd bail, in war thunder, our little nigels will pull a “THERE IS A BEAST DEEP INSIDE YOU” and stay to the bitter end, and our bombers are also pretty close to their homebase
This is normal yes. Fires do almost no damage because every bomber part has ridiculously fictional durability. So you can be on fire for a very long time and survive just fine.
