Changes to Bomber Survivability Feedback and Discussion

the wing isnt going to break lul, not unless you literaly saw it in half with M61 ap. I imagine there is definitely a loss of lift for skin damage, but obviously its a bomber flying at 5000ft, if people tested at lets say 17,000ft, im sure the adverse handling effects would be much more noticeable.

im not hugely opposed to a B17 looking like this after 2 strafing runs.

wouldn’t be a problem still… it would be chased down by the entire enemy team anyways. Literally fighter players will chase it no matter how hard to kill it.

I wonder what’s going to happen if I use my F-82 with its gun pods.

I make the point of the Sunderland, which will be virtually unkillable at the 2.0/2.3 bracket.

Here are some more examples of the damage model in effect:

I know a lot of people are talking about the survivability against munitions
but

You can body check fighters in bombers now

I understand that the wings of a heavy bomber won’t break (they’re very thick wings), but there should come a point where damage to one side would cause the aircraft to bank to the point of being unflyable. Fire damage would also cause serious harm.

shoots the same engine on a four engine bomber with a 20mm
“OMG why didn’t it die?”

shoots out every engine with the 8mm
“OMG, why is 20mm so weak?”

Should be fine, but the wings should be getting slightly more damage; things like this has happen in real life.

Bombers being shot down in real life didn’t consist of them being hit a few times then instantly exploding into pieces.

They get damaged, lose speed and altitude, get seperated from the rest of the squadron, and then get ganged up by more fighters.

That’s also a problem, since the game registers what would be a kill as serious damage, so players keep attacking to destroy it. For example, yesterday I lost a match due to time limits because I killed the last player, but instead of dying, he just went into a spin, missing a wing and on fire for a minute, so the miserable time limit now in ARBs caused me to lose.

It is more, why can i throw over 200 rounds of 20mm ammunition into the same wing spar and it doesn’t even take any damage.

Currently the only real way to take out the bombers is shooting AP at the engines. Any aircraft that rely mainly on HE such as the German 20mm are near useless against the bombers.

And it is not only aircraft shooting at the bombers, it is also SPAA shooting at them that do no damage. Something like a M163, Wirblewind, BTR-152D, Skink or SUB-I-II do no damage to the bombers damage model. They have to get lucky and either hit the engines or a pilot snipe, otherwise they cannot do anything against them.

Trying to shoot down the He 111 in the test drive as the Skink. Quite a few shots did hit, bit it continues flying no problem. The He 111 could just as well have been a Pe-8, Lancaster, Tu-1, Su-8 or TIS MA.

Whole this tread: “Why my HE bullets dont disintegrate this aircraft? Its not that gajin said that Structural elements will no longer break if someone sneeze nerby”

If you are shooting HE, it never reaches the spar…?

This is 50mm HE shell with over 400 grams of tnt equivalent.
Protection analysis on the live server vs dev server when shot at a Vautours wing from a 90 degree angle, which is the best case scenario in terms of blast and fragment damage.

Obviously there is some kind of major discrepancy here, and I would be willing to bet that in buffing the aircraft skin thickness/module hitpoints they have also bugged it in some way, since no aircraft is going to be able to widthstand a hit from what is basically a 50mm tank gun strapped to a plane.

I also would like to show off this, B-17 in the test flight tanking 10 50mm he rounds with little to no damage. In total he was hit with almost 5 Kg of tnt explosive mass equivalent.

I’ll add to the Vautour example showing the 30mm damage on the dev server vs the live server.

It fails to even penetrate the aircrafts skin and deals no damage.
Where as on the live server.

As expected 30mm shell with 90 grams of tnt equivalent penetrates the aircrafts skin and deals relatively good damage.

There are enough photos on the internet to prove it.

Because they’re exploding against the skin, not the wing spar. Do you think bombers instantly explode and fall to pieces when hit by a cannon in real life?

Me 163 hitting a B-17 multiple times across the wing with 30mm’s. Why didn’t it fall apart like wet paper?

Community wanted bombers to be strong and now they’re in uproar because you can’t instantly obliterate a bomber. Goes to show that the community isn’t happy with any change.

Fw 190 hitting a B-24. Tthe B-24 was known for being structurally weak and yet its entire wing section doesn’t explode.

B17 is also famously known for being able to shrug off 6 phoenixes(that one missile designed to destroy bombers) without even leaking oil XDDDD
Smth smth murica steel!
