480 Air belt 20mm Hispanos didnt bring down a B-17.
Before it was like 10.
I think it should be like 100-150. At most.
so I think its overtuned a bit. Which from the PoV of trying to play a bomber is great, but I dont think we should have 2-3 fighters unloading every round into one bomber either
Yeah, it was because it had loads of turret placements. Not the survivability. I think I recall something from somwhere hte Lancaster had better survivability. Though its hard to compare given the British did the smart thing of night bombing
British losses during night bombing were just as bad as American losses during daylight bombing. Lancaster was also far more likely to result in you being KIA as well vs successful at bailing out.
100-150 is absurd still, there are a lot of fighters that only have up to 250 rounds, that’s a ridiculous amount of shells to down a single bomber in the current Air Rb setting.
If currently we are talking about 5-10 rounds, then it should be around 20-30 rounds max of 20mm with the buffed model. Pretty sure that number is closer to reality. And about 3-5 for 30mms.
I dont have issue with accurate fire being needed, and that 20-30 well placed rounds bringing down the target, but im operating on a basis that aiming that accurately, that consistantly is probably not going to be practical and that you’ll probably fire 2-4 rounds for each that actually hits the desired spot.
Bombers being more resistant to HE than AP is realistic. The benefit of small caliber (20mm being included here) isn’t that it blasts apart the plane, the Pk for an A-kill (basically, the plane goes down immediately) is significantly lower for a single round of 20mm HEF than it is for AP. The benefit is that it is more likely to cause some damage to systems like oil lines, hydraulics, etc. You need big HE rounds to actually cause catastrophic failure.
That said, I do agree that the DM right now seems overtuned. It should probably be toned down, and fighters should probably get a similar change because most of the same factors that were making bombers too fragile affect fighters the same way.
Quickly had a look of which aircrafts that got the new damage model, and which aircraft did not.
list of some of the bombers that did not get a new damage model:
MBR-2-M-34
Mosquito B Mk.XVI
Brigand B 1
H.P.12
F.222
N.C.223.3
Martin 167-A3
M.B.174A-3
LeO 451 early
LeO 451 Late
M.B.175T
B18A
T18B
T 2
Also the large Ki-109 strike aircraft don’t have a buffed damaged model
At the same time, there is also these strike aircraft that also get the updated damage model buff. This includes the following:
A-20G
A-26B
PBJ-1
Do 17 Z-7
Do 217 J (not the N variant)
Ju 388
Pe-3
Su-8
TIS MA
Tu-1
Some of the strike aircraft is very effective in game, while others are not as effective. However that could change a lot. Example would be the Ju 88 C-6, would suddely be a lot more powerful since it is able to tank a lot more shells, but it still have the same firepower as before.
Even more problematic is the 3 Russian planes, the Su-8, TIS MA and Tu-1. They are already very powerful in GRB in the CAS role with their 45mm APHE, and now they would be even more powerful, since their wings and fuselage don’t take damage from something like .50cal or 20mm from SPAA.
I’ll be real, I agree that the DMs are over tuned, yet at the same time, this will be absolutely hilarious if it makes it to live as is.
The amount of salt that will be farmed in RB would be astronomical and i want to see how it would play out.
Also goes to show how many bombers in game were dying exclusively to the spars breaking apart / tail being cut off and not the plane actually being destroyed.
A plane’s airframe doesn’t instantly become weaker just because it carries fighter armament. This feels like a completely arbitrary decision that could’ve been avoided if damage models were updated uniformly across all planes.
jokes aside, gaijin did make these changes with historical documentation, thus being able to disprove these 5 30mm mine shells to take down b17 claims, BUT I believe the reason they’re tanking missiles so well isnt an issue with the bombers, but how the missiles themselves are modeled, with the bomber rework simply exposing these shortcomings
