Challenger 3 MBT - Technical Data and Discussion

you could argue that but id rather not because i dont wanna give gaijin any idea for when the thing eventually gets added, however i refuse to believe they would upgrade the cooling systems just to not fix the challengers main issue being mobility

He’s back again with another video, once again it’s a whole lot of waffle, really makes me doubt anything he says

i wouldnt believe much of anything he says

He randomly claims that 3 T14 Armatas were destroyed in Syria in that video, I’ve got no idea where he got that from. I much prefer Jerome Starky’s video for now.

the T14 armata doesnt even work i have no clue what hes on about. however i do believe hes right on the protection being unmatched

It’s probably the tanks strongest point, aside from the firepower with the new gun.

It’s a shame we probably won’t know any exact values for years if not decades.

i cant wait for it to be added and not be able to survive anything

This is the MOD you are talking about

Thats just how war thunder is sadly, tanks irl dont have to fight at 100 meters where everyone can aim for weakspots within less than a second

The engine block is capable of 1500hp, they don’t make it produce that horse power via a rev limiter because the cooling was not efficent enough to preserve the engine. It overheated. Now with a new cooling system, torque converter and turbo’s, I’d bet it makes more.

It “can” make more due to higher cooling headroom, we know the CV12 runs very hot from a abrams engine options document. It does not mean they will increase the power limit, i would expect more torque and a torque converter with a lower torque multiplier but higher transfer efficiency. I think they aim to improve part lifespan and through life efficiency by keeping the power output the same but improving all the parts in the powerpack.

I had a look through the thread and saw that jammers195 had posted a recording of the talk Colonel Will Waugh (Challenger 3 programme director) gave at tankfest 2023 on the CR3, so I gave it a listen and he says some interesting stuff.

The EPSOM Modular Armour Details (12:50–>).

EPSOM… It is designed specifically to address the threat from the latest Russian main battle tank capability and their kinetic energy threats, It is very very effective. It’s modular in nature and therefore allows us to upgrade it in the future and also allows us to tune it to less demanding enviroments should we deploy into those as well.”

This confirms that the EPSOM new modular armour is specifically for fighting kinetic energy threats. EPSOM was heavily inferred to be ERA previously by the fact Rheinmetall proposed using ERA to uparmour the tank’s turret, therefore, EPSOM is most likely a form of heavy ERA designed to deal with modern KE threats.

Engine Power and Cooling (15:50–>):

“We are doing some significant upgrades to not only the running gear , but also the main engine and gearbox as well. So, all the hydrogas suspension will be replaced with 3rd generation (latest generation) hydrogas suspension. Likewise, increased cooling within the engine itself, which will increase the power output or will have the potential to increase the power output should we need it as we move forward

This confirms that the cooling increase is to allow an increase in power, he doesn’t explicitly state the power WILL increase, but he does state the upgrades make it possible and it’s being considered (as of 2023)

This was almost 3 years ago now, so a lot will have changed by now, but what he says on EPSOM and the engine upgrades almost certainly still apply. Jerome Starky said they told him (as of early this year) that the power would be increasing, so we will have to see.

it looks so damn cool, i just hope it has 1500hp

We know for certain it CAN have more horsepower, the question is did they decide to do it

it can 100% run the 1500hp even the cr2 could for a small ammount of time but if it will is whole new question

personally I really want to know what standard the 1500hp was measured at (given that DIN standard gives the CV12 as fitted to CR1/2 ~100hp more)

i wish i knew what this meant but im not smart

We can’t be certain until we get a high-resolution image, but this could be the 6th new Challenger 3.

ERM appears to be different from the previous five CR3s (DR94AA, 62KK19, DS89AA, 61KK81, 62KK17).
