Don’t want to do that, as we’ve seen in the last few years the origin nation can have a say on where they’re used.
The entire point of the challenger donation was to light a fire under the assorted nations arses, and it worked. Couldn’t have done that without germanys permission if we have leopards.
That completely sells out our just about kicking tank industry completely.
The issue is the UK has let too many wounds fester and now can’t afford to treat them all.
Do you want a new MBT or do you want a new domestic fighter?
More ships or a new MBT?
Bottom line is tanks aren’t the priority, the UK cannot afford to be idealistic unfortunately.
CR3 is supposed to just be a stopgap, though we all know thats not how its going to work out we can at least hope they save now for later so they can start fresh (which BTW is totally possible, see the K2 Black Panther).
Fundamentally Britain is a island nation, and for better or worse we’re going back to pre-war thinking of small highly trained army that acts as a buffer for our larger allies to reposition. And instead focusing on the Navy and the air force. For better or worse.
yeah, realisticaly UK stays an island. For defense wars tanks are nearly useless in your case
you just dont need to worry about ground invasion.
why worry about tanks, if you can stop enemies setting foot on your land with ships or planes in the first place
Iirc the last time we tried using an indigenous turret on a Leo 2 hull the Germans reacted by tightening up their export laws and killing the program.
Then we’d have the cost of procuring the new tank hulls, new driver training units, new stocks of spare parts, retraining crews for maintenance of the new engine, losing engine commonality across the heavy armoured vehicles, as someone mentioned before there would be potential for Germany to restrict use of the tanks in future, and I’m sure there’ll plenty more reasons that don’t come to mind right now.
And all that will be an addition to the current cost of the program cause the majority of the money is being spent on the new turret, and what you’d save by discarding HAAIP will be a drop in the ocean compared to the additional cost.
The NATO commonality will be more for potential export, as an upgraded turret on existing hulls will likely be the cheapest option for a nation looking to improve/replace a tank fleet.
I definitely would put a bit of a caveat on that, considering the RAF is too busy worrying if they’ll offend anybody with Squadron nicknames, and replacing “Airmanship” and so on
The Navy is also in a dire state, by the looks of things thanks to the MOD’s constant stupidity and costcutting we’ll have a grand total of 7 Frigates. 7.
And that’s assuming nothing major happens to any of the other 23s, or that the 26s and 31s aren’t delayed further (for god sake Government, start the Type 83 program now)
Mind you, I’m not sure how the army can really downsize anymore (thank you, Nick Carter! Idiot!)
Unfortunately RAF spending is not fancy at the moment, most airbases are reaching the point where they need refits over the next couple of years, so all the money is there, they’re also spending a fuck tonne on new barracks as well, which while doesn’t give us enthusiasts anything fun, is much appreciated by the people that have to live in them considering most are in a dire state, (do you like rats and black mold? Join the air force!)
I don’t know much about the navy spending except it’s more that the army lmao
Considering the 5.5 billion pounds and decades spent by the Ministry of Defense on such a failed project on the Ajax project, such a proposal seems to be correct.
Japan has spent 10Bn less USD than the UK consistently for more than the last 20 years on defence, and they’re ahead by pretty much every metric in terms of units, quality etc.
(They have more advanced destroyers built post-2000 than we have total surface escorts).
And seeing as France manage similarly well, I’m convinced anyone but the MoD could do it.
its a little sensationalized ment to be a dig at laserpig who he has a beef with and laserpig did a video on the CR2 a while back. either way the chally 2 as is, needed to be upgraded and hey it is. who could have seen that coming
Yeah - don’t bother with Redeffect when it comes to anything used in a certain current conflict… videos pre-2022 are usually sort-of-okay. A bit rose-tinted when it comes to Soviet-era stuff, but no worse than a Brit would be about UK Cold War stuff like the Lightning.
Post 2022? If we put aside the (now deleted) ‘Javelin Top Attack doesn’t work!’ video… he basically reads the glossy sales brochure from Ural Novzozgozoroadjklwigglyword (however the hell they spell that) and presents it as gospel. That’s about it.
Western tanks on the other hand are really bad, according to the company who currently manufactures T-72s. So they must be.
He hasn’t quite made the jump into weapons-grade moon-howler territory (technical term) but we’re seeing a few worrying signs of a slide into Z-think. He needs to drink more tea and learn to queue.
I won’t post them here as I’m not sure if they are allowed to be posted
There some interesting pictures on Twitter circulating of a Ukrainian Challenger 2 which took a HEAT shell to the turret face (as well as a hit to the coupola and another part of the tank) and survived.
The external layer of paint/skin of the armour has been blown off, showing the fixings below. The mantlet has the exact same fixings as the turret face, this could indicate the mantlet does infact have composite armour?
I saw a burning CR2 that had catastrophically detonated from a Lancet hit. The quality is low but the tank the observation drone is following is definitely a CR2
