Challenger 2 MBT - Technical data and Discussion (Part 1)

Well, now where source?

Personally I think it should include the backing plate at the very least in its STANAG protection value. If you look at other ASPRO equipped vehicles they arrange the tiles etc in different ways depending on the vehicle. This is likely to include backing plates etc to meet that protection level.

If we as an example mounted just a ASPRO tile on say some wood (hyperbole just to give it the worst case). It would not achieve the same levels of protection as when its mounted on a composite or even aluminium backing plate.

This can be seen on TES/OES where the CR2 armour behind the ASPRO-HMT array leads to STANAG level 6 protection when the ASPRO-HMT is rated at level 5;

You can see we’re they mount the ASPRO-HMT on to the VARMA.

The worst possible example in WT case

Ahaha magic log, it might have 100mm of thickness but its multipliers are non-existant so it provides no where close to 100mm RHA protection.

So I can see what you mean here, but do you have anyway to confirm that backing section actually contains VARMA?

I mean, the only thing i can think about that will be a Chobham is VARMA blocks, but me thinking means nothing :/

Here is 2F, 2H and 2G in order

I’m assuming the layout is currently also assumed to be like this;

Didn’t they change it due to a Challenger getting hit by a rpg29

I think the cover overextends the ERA,

That would be logical for me as it has to keep it in place
I use the ECM box as a reference

Could also be the backing section of the block assumed to be VARMA is just the mounting for the block so they can be opened and replaced?

Tbh, it can be anything :/
This book states that both Chob and Aspro are there

Sadly i do not know the source, but it has to be past 2008

Could the Chobam they’re talking about also be the backing plate?

Afaik the back palte was not even once refered to as Chobham. So i doubt it but it cant be excluded. Also the series of layers bugs me, how would it work? Not sure what is going on here tbh.

are there actually sources stating the back plate to be composit?

I think there were some, i do not have them with me but i remember reading it

Oh god

no, they arent, thats not varma behind, thats just the layered approach ASPRO-HMT uses.

backing plate is a 40mm RHa plate so no xD
