TL;DR: A L O N G 6x6 armored car fitted with a large RWS in service with the People’s Armed Police of China.
History:
The HMMWV, better known as the Humvee, is an extraordinarily popular American 4x4 military vehicle developed to replace vehicles like the Willys Jeep, M151 Jeep, and M561 Gama Goat. Entering service in 1983, the Humvee very quickly drew the attention of the world, China included. In 1988, AM General demonstrated an M998 HMMWV at the Beijing Defense Exhibition. At the time, however, the PLA had concerns regarding the cost of maintenance for such a bulky vehicle. The offer was not perused. On January 17, 1991, the Gulf War began and with it, Operation Desert Storm. During this operation, the Humvee found its claim to fame as it was highly popularized, via television, as a reliable and effective personnel and cargo transporter. Needless to say, the Humvee had proven itself and Chinese officials were reconsidering the possibility of procuring Humvees or Humvee-like vehicles. Luckily for them, an easy way of getting such vehicles had just appeared. The popularization of the Humvee during the Gulf War had made many civilians want one of their own. This led to AM General marketing the Hummer H1 in 1992, a civilian version of the M998 Humvee. Shortly after its debut, the Chinese petroleum industry purchased a few before importing them into China and handing them over to Chinese automakers for reverse-engineering. One of these automakers was the Dongfeng Motor Group, which quickly produced copies, showing them off at a car show in 2003 under the designation EQ2050. 57 of these vehicles underwent military trials in 2004. The EQ2050 was accepted into PLA service in 2006. Just as soon as it was accepted, ways to improve it were already being looked into. This would lead to a whole slew of upgraded variants over several years, one of these being the CSK131; itself becoming the subject of numerous modifications and upgrades. First debuting at the 2014 Zhuhai Airshow, the EQ2101 would be one of the more extreme developments. It sought to allow the chassis to take on harder jobs like cargo and squad transport. As a result, the chassis would be elongated to include a third axle. This new space would serve as the troop compartment and, in the vehicle’s base configuration, would feature a raised roof for troop comfort. The cargo version, called EQ2101EB, would swap this troop compartment for a flatbed. Since the PLA already had many CSK131s and its variants in service, the EQ2101 was a no-brainer as was adopted as well. Just one year later, a new EQ2101 variant would make its debut at the 2015 Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War military parade, however, it wouldn’t be in the service of the PLA. Called the CBF215, this new variant would be employed by the People’s Armed Police. The CBF215 would features the standard Chinese military police kit. Protective cages for the windows, emergency lights, loud speakers, two six-barreled tear gas/smoke launchers, and (who could forget) a massive remote weapon station fitted with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun and 35mm automatic grenade launcher. In addition to this kit, the CBF215 would raise the roof of the troop compartment even higher to accommodate emergency lights above the troop windows. The intended purpose of the CBF215 was to serve as a partial replacement to the WJ03Bs in PAP service. These vehicles were based on the WZ551 APC and incurred a lot of issues coming with being a cut down military APC, the biggest being cost. They were also just overall pretty overkill for what they were expected to do. The CBF215, being essentially just a large car, was much more reasonable both in terms of cost and suitability for the job. The vehicle still serves to this day alongside the WJ03Bs.
Place In War Thunder:
Obligatory disclaimer: The 35mm QLZ04 has access to the DFJ87 HEAT grenade capable of penetrating up to 80mm of armor. The 12.7mm QJC88 has access to tungsten APDS capable of penetrating around 52mm of armor.
Automatic grenade launchers as a vehicle’s main weapon is an understandably controversial topic when it comes to their possible implementation into the game, however, it must be noted that this is largely due to poor understanding of their capabilities. It is a common assumption that all rounds fired from AGLs must be low pen, no doubt partially thanks to the horrible in-game performance of the BMP-2M’s AGL. This “lack of pen” assumption combined with a poor muzzle velocity makes many people assume that a vehicle equipped only with an automatic grenade launcher would have to be placed at an uncomfortably low BR to be effective. The CBF215 equipped with the QLZ04 simply would not suffer from such a BR placement thanks to its 80mm penetrating HEAT grenade. Yes, its velocity is still very low, however, 80mm of pen puts this grenade at the same level as 25mm APDS and only 21mm worse than 25mm APFSDS. Playstyle would be rather unique, however, not completely unfamiliar. The CBF215 would essentially like any other wheeled autocannon carrier. The main difference is the required distance from your target to actually cause damage being much MUCH smaller, almost right on top of them, essentially promoting an incredibly suicidal playstyle. That being said, once you do get within range, you will not struggle to penetrate foe you may face, with your 80mm of pen at 400rpm. The 12.7 shouldn’t be scoffed at either, especially if given access to tungsten APDS and DVD06 duplex rounds. It must also be remembered that, at its core, the CBF215 is a car with a powerful engine. Although it is much larger, you can easily expect to be zipping around the battlefield at ludicrous speeds much like the Type 93. Combine this speed with an RWS and huge empty space in the form of an unused troop compartment and you may find yourself surprised by its survivability. As the CBF215 is a police vehicle, it has little place in the tech tree, however, it would fit in just fine as some sort of event or battlepass vehicle.
(If you want an idea of how this weapon would perform in-game, take the BMP-2M out for a test drive, switch to the grenade launcher and shoot at something. Now instead of every round just not doing anything, imagine it penetrating every time and being able to move around much faster. The Russian AG-30 and Chinese QLZ04 have nearly identical fire rates and velocities.)
