History.
The Caproni Ca.135 was a twin-engine, low-wing medium bomber made by the Italian company Cantieri Aeronautici Bergamaschi (CAB), part of the Caproni group. The first example flew for the first time on 1 April 1935, and two years later it entered service with the Regia Aeronautica. This plane, although the first engines applied were quite disappointing, achieved some success with the air forces of smaller nations such as Peru, Hungary and Spain. In 1938 the DGA requested Caproni Taliedo to experimentally install a new engine unit on a serial example of the Ca.135 «Asso». The M.M. specimen is chosen for the transformation. 20922, which over time was re-engined not once but three times. The Ca.169, as the new aircraft was designated, carried out its first test flight on 12 May 1942. In the spring of 1943 the aircraft, after having also undergone modifications to various parts of it, was finally re-engined with powerful and powerful Alfa Romeo A.R.135 R.C.32 engines. The aircraft was further tested and a big improvement was noted compared to the older and more basic Ca.135bis, but unfortunately with the armistice events, traces of the aircraft were lost.
In addition to the new engines, the aircraft had new vertical fins, modified in design and in the greater surface area and more squared in shape and there was a negative keying of the horizontal empennage to try to correct the aircraft’s tendency to dive.
Armaments and propulsion.
The aircraft was armed with two 12.7 mm Scotti Isotta Fraschini machine guns, both equipped with 500 rounds. The rear armament consisted of up to 1,600 kg of bombs in various combinations.
The plane was powered by two Alfa Romeo A.R.135 R.C.32 engines with 1,410 hp of homologation power (portable up to 1,600). With this power, the plane could reach a maximum speed of 485 km/h.
