History.
On 19 June 1939 CANSA (a branch of FIAT) presented the FC.12 project to the Ministry of Aeronautics, a single-engine monoplane that could be produced at low cost due to the fact that the aircraft used (despite the initial plans) a Fiat A engine. 30 RAbis, i.e. the same as the FIAT CR.32 fighter. The aircraft was to be used as a ground attack aircraft and was examined by the “General Directorate of Production and Supply”, which deemed it not performing well enough for the main role of trainer (too powerful engine and insufficient performance, as well as excessive use of fuel). On 16 October 1940 the plane made its first flight with Fausto Moroni in command. After the Air Force’s rejection of the aircraft, CANSA was forced to register it with the civil serial number I-TUFF, and decided to modify it to try to get the aircraft accepted in the role of ground attack aircraft or dive bomber, or ultimately as a fighter aircraft. Armament was increased from one to four 12.7 mm machine guns (plus an optional one usable by the co-pilot/machine gunner) and the vehicle was equipped with airbrakes and the ability to carry stud bombs. The modified vehicle was tested again by the same pilot at Guidonia airport, but the DGCA still did not accept the vehicle. CANSA tried to sell it unsuccessfully abroad, and after that the plane was kept at the company until it was lost.
Armaments and propulsion.
The aircraft was armed with 4 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns with 250 rounds of ammunition per gun. It was also possible to install another weapon in a defensive position. Furthermore, the aircraft could carry up to 4 50 kg bombs and a stud bomb.
As regards the engine aspect, the plane was powered by a 600 HP Fiat A.30 RAbis engine, which allowed the plane to reach a maximum speed of 425 km/h and a ceiling height of 7600 m.
