To get the dogshit damage I had to shoot the spar directly (the other shots are a few pixels away from the “sweet spot” of non-black wingroot).
Which of course makes ABSOLUTELY 0 sense, a direct hit to the spar from above with shell exploding inside the spar would actually have a decent chance to mess it up, M-geschoss would still penetrate quite a bit into it, despite not being the strongest shell design, as the nose part is still relatively thick.
Every other shot caused the wingroot to go black, which might actually be survivable (might!). The 1-shots have to be landed a bit further out.
Take into account L-39 also has a spar running down the leading edge of the wing.
I mean, I know sometimes damage “bugs out” and shells deal way less dmg than they should (f.e. CW-21 tanking 2 37mm mine shells and ending up with half the elevator missing and that’s it), so I’m not really surprised that sometimes weapons are unreliable, but this unreliability of course plays in favor of 20mm because if you have 5% chance to roll the “bugged damage” with more hits the chance all of them will be bugged drops a lot qhile hifh caliber guns usually hit once.
a huge interceptor
a quite tough fighter-bomber
the only other trainer here that also melts under any fire
I have not survived any hits in the L-39. When someone hits you, your die.
Somewhere in the leading edge from a head-on, I know it was a 20mm because it was one of his wing gunpods that did it. It’s kinda reliable, I was getting a red wing about half the time yesterday.
The damage is overall just fine right now.
If any shell would not penetrate a spar, it would be the very light and slow mineshell.
It’s survivable. You only really die when more shells are hitting.
I wouldn’t say it’s just fine; it could be better. The world isn’t going to implode if ShVAK damage was reduced to where it was 2-3 years ago vs whatever happened when they made the latest fragmentation changes.
But at the same time the exact same people would still be crying bloody murder over it and every other cannon in relation to the MG.151.
I did say overall, it can be improved still. But it hasn’t been this good in a long time.
Spar is strong, but it’s not armor grade, it’s relatively soft, because even aviation grade aluminium is dogshit compared to armor steel.
Of course will stop a destabilised bullet in some cases but 20mm shell going 450m/s (so at few hundred meters) will punch right into it from the angle I’ve shown.
If such shell explodes while “inside” the spar, that’s the worst scenario possible. Of course such shot would be super rare, as the target area is like less than a centimeter wide.
Damage right now is way too high, because a single 20mm shell should not blow off Do-335 or even Bf 109 wing. Right now both are made of paper, Do is at disadvantage, because being 8t gives it 0 additional strength.
Every jet but Yak-15 and Me-262 has a ton of HP compared to props, and that includes trainers. F-84 is not exactly “big and tough” by jet standards, mind you.
I see you move goalposts. Now because jet with tons of HP luckily survived and there exists a spot where wingroot “only” goes red, it somehow means Fw 190 D9 and Bf 109 getting 1-shot by Shvak mean nothing.
What’s next? Because B-52 hit by Hoe-5 folds after 0,3s of firing it means Shvak damage vs P-47 is reasonable?
A few bullets and 1 M-geschoss to the tail (OK, MAYBE 2) I know it’s an early-war bomber, but god damn:
Don’t worry, these farman bombers cam actually fly without a tail if they use flaps.
Mainly due to the dihedral the wing tips have which provive stability.
Point still stands, 2 mine rounds for a barn to split in half.
Four-engine bombers has become completely unplayable now with this damage model.
What can I even do with a B-17 at 5.0 BR, an airplane incapable of any evasive maneuvers (it breaks at 2G), whose defenses consist of only 12.7mm (a gun incapable of stopping an approach), and whose tail gets cut off with 1-2 ShVAK hits (= 4 grams of explosive)?
In many instances the US AAR reported that single engine fighter can take 1-2 type99/ho-5 20mm HE (not dud) on the wing without affecting flying characteristics.
A single 20mm blow up the wing-root and turn it into black is definitely unacceptable.
I mean, most liky one. The other M-geschoss never shows up, and this usually means it impacted after the tail was considered “broken” also I was most likely hitting with only 1 cannon.
the jet with “tons of hp” in question:
I have literally atomized a BI by crashing into him head-on and took no significant damage.
How can you guarantee only one shot hit?
And as many have said earlier in the thread, this is exactly what you guys want - the ability to make big mistakes and not get punished at all for it.
current system doesn’t punish the mistake not looking at the only statcard that has correct information and not giving a single fuck to the “show armor” tab.
It punishes weapon swaps and it punishes reading.
It betrays the “Realistic aspect” of WT, via merging all damage to one and makes armor useless since I just need to “shoot at wing / tail” at it falls off.
Yak-3P and Yak-3 are supposed to be worlds apart, but they aren’t since 1 shvak is all I need, 3 are overkill
I suppose Japanese are even more stupid since they went for a 30mm with fuckass firerate when they should have just crammed a fishing sink into a 20mm and call it a day, we can also call germany stupidtown since they invented Mine rounds.
Maybe all nations are completely and uterly stupid for even try to manifest the concept of an AP round for A2A duties or armor to protect pilots/ammo/cooling/engines from other aircraft
It was just 6g of TNT and as much mass you can cram in there to allow for better inertia and ballistics.
Spoiler
ADMIRE! The perfect A2A round! Able to split a 65.96 m2 wing in less than second of a trigger press.

I suppose I am a prodigy!
I have literally atomized a BI by crashing into him head-on and took no significant damage.
That’s literally broken air collision code for you. Nihil novi.
How can you guarantee only one shot hit?
By firing a dogshit burst and then watching in slow motion? Or clicking people out of existence for teh lulz.
If you want a game with bullet sponge damage model where planes just keep flying until the pilot is killed then Il-2 Great Battles is right there.
I suppose Japanese are even more stupid since they went for a 30mm with fuckass firerate when they should have just crammed a fishing sink into a 20mm and call it a day, we can also call germany stupidtown since they invented Mine rounds.
Well, there’s a reason they lost the war, right? the Idiots believed that existing calibers were insufficient for aerial warfare, and in “the bigger, the better”
current system doesn’t punish the mistake not looking at the only statcard that has correct information
Which you can’t do anything about, as I’ve shown above. 99% of cannons only have one belt worth using. You can look for the best shells available, but that’ll be completely useless if they’re not even in any belt, or only as one shell out of four, and maybe even mixed in with even worse shells.
So either you get a gun that works, or you don’t. What ammo you’re firing is ultimately inconsequential.
It punishes weapon swaps and it punishes reading.
How does it punish weapon swaps? A 37mm cannon on a fighter was always a very niche option.
And it actually makes gameplay better, since there is a much smaller difference in BR between differently armed models of the same plane, and results in neither being so under/overtiered relative to its flight performance as before.
That’s literally broken air collision code for you. Nihil novi.
By the way, what happened to your “L-39 has tons of hp” spiel?
By the way, what happened to your “L-39 has tons of hp” spiel?
It has tons of HP, compared to props just like Putara, which is a goddamn flying tank. But even with tons of HP, survival against real sh*tter 3.0 20mm or some HE 12.7.m is not guaranteed, far from it.
