I understand the BR and ranking system, but why not do match ups of time accurate tanks that were actually fielded at the same time? Before everyone one says “do you want to fight a tiger with m4 (75) Sherman? Yes, theres plenty of ways to balance out the match. Each team gets 2 heavies, 6 mediums, 3 lights at any given time and each player gets the chance to play as one of each of the 3 lives. Or maybe do a historical battles mode that changes every week or month. WW2 one week, Korea next, Cold War “what if,” 6 days war so on so forth. You could even program mission parameters to the mode. Also, why not a medium and light tank mode only, or heavies only? Maybe I just want to have a fun 8 BR game but with light tanks?
Obviously, this is a good suggestion. It not only perfectly addresses the balance issue but also provides more room for the addition of future vehicles. However, in reality, players will only choose powerful vehicles. You can’t expect a Sherman player to stick to using their Sherman just because they like it and become prey for a Tiger tank. Looking back at previous world wars, with the same number of Shermans, Tiger tanks, and Leopard tanks landing in Normandy… it ultimately turned into a showdown between eight P-47s and OsiWinds.
Most of the time it would not work at all.
so it would just be m18 vs sdkfz puma instead? still doesnt exactly seem like it would be any better than the BR system
Here is how this will go down.
-people figure out the stronger side and only queue for that.
-they all try to get into the strongest tank. If you limit it to a certain amount (2) at a time, people will sit in the respawn screen and wait.
-many will leave if they are forced into the weak tanks.
Maybe they could balance it with vehichle specific sp cost? So yeah, you could in theory spawn in a Maus in late WW2, for like 2000 sp, but you are much better with a Pz IV with like 50 or Panther for 100 points. Similarly a Kv -1 could be the same thing against early Panzers. The only problem, that setting this for every vehichle, for every Br would be a hell to balance out.
And obviusly some Ai soft targets, and other objectives, that even the most useless tanks could benefit from.
I would say in a game mode like this we could exclude things like the Maus or those weird American prototypes maybe top vehicles could be like king tigers and t34’s or t32’s maybe even just a Pershing ect.
Mmm, yes… the balance of T-64s vs M48s.
Nah, not a fan of unrealistic artificial restrictions.
Didn’t like it in groups I’ve played with previously that tried too hard, won’t like it here either.
but 30% of the time it will work everytime
This adds an additional snowball effect.
The team that pulls ahead at the start of the match gets better tanks first and gets stronger and repeat.
Well, yes but as we have same class penalty in game, you may be able to spawn your king tiger for I don’t know 600 sp, but you are less likely to spawn a second one for 1200 sp. At least that’s what I’m thinking. It should be balancable.
We had a mode like that back in the day, and guess what?
Nobody wanted to play the M4 Sherman.
It ended up in endless queue times, and when you finally got a match, it was only 4v4 or something similar.
I find it tricky to do.
Historically for example that would place a BR 2.0 Aufklärungspanzer 38(t) alongside a 6.7 King Tiger…
As a result, people will wait for certain tanks to become available. Tigers, T29-32, Pershing/Super Pershing, IS-1/2/3 etc. are by far the most used WW2 tanks (that I’ve seen). Not to say that we’d never get a historical gm or event, but this isn’t a good way to balance it.
A lot to ask when Sim does this and it isn’t exactly perfect.
Because it’d just split matchmaking, so would all of this. Not only would there be ranges from 1.0 to 12.7, there’d be (from your suggestion) a mode just for heavies, mediums, lights, TDs (i assume not AAs).
If you want to do it “historically” Germany should always be outnumbered.
There were tens of thousands of Shermans and T-34s produced vs fewer Pz 4s and a LOT less Panthers and Tigers.
Germany went for quality vs quantity. Not sure how you can implement that in the game - unless 1 side was willing to have fewer players - like there’s a TOTAL set of points for each side, and the more powerful the tank (looking at you King Tiger) the fewer players you will have.
Single player computer games like Mechcommander had a system like the above.
Very hard to do in a multiplayer game.
Easy solve, use the hero system from original star wars battle front 2. You only get one of your 3 lives to play as a heavy/AA. Best player on the team after a certain amount of time gets first crack, not aloud to J out or you lose the chance. Once you die in said heavy, the chance goes to the next best player. Gives incentive to help the team and play to win (not just kills, but points taken etc.) Now if people that are at the bottom complain they never get a chance, well that’s because you are probably taking a light tank and flying to point just to get destroyed, so why reward players who won’t utilize a tank to its full potential?
I think by using actual battles, and with some slight modifications if such a lop sided match up was present, you could adjust so things while still achieving the ideally game mode I’m talking about.

I’ve about this where is seems like a decent amount of the player base wants a mode like this as the defaults are getting stale.
See my other replies to this same point, I don’t wanna keep copy and pasting the same reply.
