History.
The CV33 (later to become the L3/33) tank is one of, if not the most famous Italian tanks of World War II. The vehicle was born in the early 1930s based on a British vehicle, and over time the vehicle was updated into three main versions that were used extensively with the Italian armed forces.
In 2018, the Italian Army decided to take one of several remaining L3/33 wagons, registration number RE 7221, and donate it to the ‘Cingoli e Ruote per Conoscere la Storia CRCS Onlus’ organisation to have it restored and put back into operation totally free of charge. Work began immediately, and after two years of hard work, the wagon was put back into full working order: power train in working order, tracks well oiled, colouring restored, and of course demilitarised armament. Obviously, the small matter of colouring arose, but a solution was found fairly quickly: the wagon was coloured in a colour scheme reminiscent of the original colouring applied on the L3 wagon prototypes and a few production vehicles before the creation of the camo used during the course of World War II.
After the arrangement and presentation, the vehicle remained “in service” at the non-profit organisation, which at almost every one of its rallies displays it and has it mechanically activated to stretch the vehicle’s tracks.
The camouflage.
The tank was coloured with a semi-historical colour scheme: not totally accurate but not wrong either. The camo was also applied at the end of the working, alias in the 2020.
As mentioned earlier, the camouflage scheme is reminiscent of that of the L3/33 prototype tanks and various other prototype vehicles (such as the 47 mm self-propelled tank on the L3 hull), i.e. slightly wavy stripes running vertically and horizontally across the tank and surmounting a sand-yellow “background” (the classic Italian desert camo colour of the time). The stripes are coloured in two colours, namely dark green and amaranth tending slightly towards brown.
