History.
The 90/53 self-propelled vehicle is one of the most powerful Italian vehicles of World War II known for its massive firepower. The vehicle was born in November 1941 given the difficulties of Italian-German troops in facing the massive and ever-present Soviet KV-1 heavy tanks. In March 1942, the first example of the armored vehicle rolled out of Ansaldo factories and the vehicles were assigned for crew training.
In mid-1943 the delivered vehicles took part in the Italian-German attempt to stem the Anglo-American landing on the Italian peninsula, and the self-propelled vehicles proved to be well-made vehicles capable of inflicting serious damage on enemy forces if well coordinated. Nevertheless, events went as everyone knows, and most of the vehicles were destroyed in combat or by mechanical failure. However, one self-propelled vehicle survived the war. The vehicle reportedly belonged to the CLXIII Group from 90/53 initially stationed in Paternò, however, the location where the vehicle was captured is not known. However, after capture the vehicle was loaded onto a U.S. naval convoy and was transferred to the Aberdeen Proving Ground, where it was tested for an undetermined period before being left to itself and later being transferred to the U.S. Army Artillery Museum at Fort Sill. For an uncertain period, the vehicle was left exposed outside without special care or protection, but in 2013 it was decided to refurbish the vehicle. The damaged parts were replaced, and a new color scheme based on the period color scheme was applied (although the accuracy of the color scheme is a few questionable), as well as the vehicle’s original license plate was reapplied, which is still on display at the Museum.
The camouflage.
The vehicle is colored with a green color superimposed on light yellow Saharan Khaki spots, and the license plate has the classic red color for the “RE” part and black for the serial number “5825”.
