BVP M-80AB1 (2020)

History and Description

In 2020, the Military Technical Institute (VTI) of Serbia presented a different approach to the modernization of the BVP M-80A. Unlike previous modernization attempts, this retained the original 20/1 one-man turret with its 20 mm M55 autocannon and 7.62 mm M86 machine gun. The old turret received additional armor, a new thermal sight with a laser rangefinder, a 30 mm M93 grenade launcher, six M79 smoke grenades, and 9M14-2T and 2F Malyutka missiles.

The vehicle’s hull is identical to that of the BVP M-80AB2. It features the original M-80A armored hull with additional steel plates on all sides. The seating configuration of infantrymen was changed from facing outwards to facing each other. This was achieved by moving the central fuel tank from the troop compartment to two smaller ones located on the sides of the vehicle. Two swing doors were replaced with a hydraulic ramp, giving infantrymen easier access. As opposed to the M-80AB2, the OM-403 engine remained at 320 horsepower.

This new vehicle was named BVP M-80AB1, and should not be confused with the BVP M-80AB1 that was presented in 2016. The modernized IFV was seen at numerous military expeditions and even exercises but ultimately wasn’t adopted by the Serbian army, as it was overshadowed by the BVP M-80AB1 featuring a 20 mm RCWS.
