Took me a while to find this, it has some cool info on how the Starstreak and its guidance works.
Interestingly, they show an armour plate which has been hit by a Starstreak.
He never describes the exact thickness, he just says “over an inch thick”. It could quite easily be 35-40mm thick and the Starstreak seems to have penetrated it pretty easily, punching a huge hole in it.
Hello, quick question about the English Jaguars, I’m preparing a bug report because it seems that the French Jaguars can equip the BOZ 103 countermeasures pod in internal wing points. Does anyone know if the English version can also use this ?
BOZ pods to my knowledge require a control panel installation (see tornado), certainly have nothing primary to confirm any BOZ usage on British Jaaaaaags.
Okay, thanks for the info, for the integration on the French version there are no official documents that talk about it but there are photos and many testimonies that attest to the use of BOZ, I don’t know if it will be enough to add it.
EDIT : I have an official source who talks about the use of the BOZ in the case of SEAD missions without naming any particular aircraft, but the only aircraft that was flying these missions at that time was the Jaguar.
Don’t think it’s something that was ever done with our Jags. Apart from Tornado I’ve only seen BOZ on Canberra PR.9 and Nimrod MR.2
IIRC the French Jaguars that carried BOZ were using it to generate “chaff corridors” during strikes, until France developed Barax and Barracuda ECM for Jaguar in the 80s. Where in the UK we already had jamming pods by the time BOZ-107 was introduced to the RAF for Tornado alongside Sky Shadow (~1985 or there abouts).
So there wasn’t the same initial need for it on RAF Jaguar as there was for the French - pairing AN/ALQ-101 + Phimat had been sufficient from the late 1970s, and continued to be until Jaguar retired.
Yes exactly, it is testimonies of this use that made me discover this use on the French Jaguars, they used it with the CT-51 before the introduction of the more modern jammers
It may impact the UK F-4’s and Harrier’s, if I can find more info which should improve SRM Acquisition speeds, I’ll follow it with it’s counterpart for the increased Field of Regard while Slaved shortly.
Oh I completely agree, I’m not sure how you balance it, other than to make it a game convention that chaff smoke systems are effective against it because IRL they aren’t;
But even then the gameplay style for mmW Brimstone guidance is very difficult to counter from the ground, boarding on not possible other than hard kill APS.
