Hello everyone, and welcome to this new suggestion.

Today, I am presenting a little-known French aircraft from the interwar period: the Breguet Br.414.

During the 1920s, the French Air Force General Staff launched an aircraft development program known as “Multiplace de combat” (Multi-seat Combat Aircraft). The objective was to create a versatile aircraft capable of performing a wide range of missions, including patrol, bombing, bomber escort, and potentially even fighter operations. Several French manufacturers responded to the program, resulting in a number of highly original and unconventional aircraft designs.

Drawing on its extensive experience in military aviation, Breguet decided to participate in the program. The resulting design was the Br.410, a twin-engine monoplane that made its maiden flight in 1931.

Although the aircraft showed some promise, it also suffered from several shortcomings. It was somewhat underpowered, while the absence of ventral armament left a significant gap in its defensive capabilities. Breguet therefore continued developing the design, producing several variants in an attempt to improve its overall performance.

The final version was designated Br.414. While it retained a similar overall appearance to the original Br.410, the aircraft incorporated several important modifications.

The most significant change was the installation of considerably more powerful engines, providing approximately 15% more power than those fitted to the earlier versions. The second major improvement was the addition of a ventral turret, addressing one of the main weaknesses identified on the original design and providing the aircraft with additional defensive firepower.

The Br.414 made its maiden flight in 1933, having been developed in response to the French Air Force’s 1932 requirements. However, despite the improvements introduced over the earlier prototypes, the aircraft offered only limited advantages compared with its predecessors.

As a result, the Br.414 was not selected for production or adopted by the French Air Force. Breguet nevertheless made one final attempt to revive the design under the 1936 aircraft tender.

By this time, however, the rapid development of military aviation had left the Br.414 hopelessly outdated. Modern monoplane bombers were already offering significantly better performance, making the aging Breguet design increasingly difficult to justify.

Characteristics

Length : 11.30 m

Width : 20.20 m

Height : 5.09 m

Mass :

  • Empty : 3,375 kg
  • Full : 7,200 kg

The aircraft is powered by two 760 hp Gnome & Rhône 14Kdrs engines, enabling it to reach a top speed of 310 km/h and a service ceiling of 7,700 m.

The crew consists of four personnel: a pilot, a nose gunner, and a rear gunner, while the ventral observer takes on the additional role of a gunner.

The aircraft’s armament is particularly noteworthy for its size, featuring a strong defensive setup alongside a light bomb load.

Defensive armament:

  • 1 x twin 7.7mm Lewis machine gun (front turret)
  • 1 x twin 7.7mm Lewis machine gun (rear turret)
  • 1 x twin 7.7mm Lewis machine gun (ventral turret)

Offensive armament:

  • 1,300 kg of bombs

In-game, this aircraft would be an interesting addition to the French tree, providing a unique low-BR ground-attack aircraft that combines average flight performance with effective defensive capabilities.
