BR changes repeatedly strand Ace qualification progress when vehicles must be moved between crew slots

I have been playing War Thunder since 1 August 2016, and I have purchased 11 crew slots for every nation. Even with that many slots, official BR changes regularly force me to rebuild my presets, especially at crowded BR ranges where one lineup may contain far more viable vehicles than there are practical crew positions.

The main problem is that the research progress toward a free Ace qualification is tied to the exact vehicle–crew combination, rather than following the vehicle itself.

When a vehicle is moved to another crew slot, the accumulated progress is not technically deleted, but it remains attached to the old crew. For the reorganized lineup, that progress is effectively stranded, and the player must begin accumulating Ace qualification research again on the new crew.

The upcoming change to the Super Hellcat from 6.3 to 6.7 is a clear example.

My current Super Hellcat crew has accumulated:

850,878 / 1,140,000 RP

toward the free Ace qualification.

However, my 6.7 preset is already crowded. To place the Super Hellcat into an appropriate 6.7 lineup, I must rearrange several vehicles and crew slots. The least damaging solution I found is to move the M56 to another crew, but even that strands:

168,058 / 480,000 RP

of Ace qualification progress.

Moving the Super Hellcat itself would be much worse, because it would strand more than 850,000 RP accumulated through normal gameplay.

The same problem exists in aircraft lineups. My Yak-9UT currently has:

554,860 / 570,000 RP

toward a free Ace qualification. It is only 15,140 RP away from completion. If a BR or lineup change requires me to move it to another crew, almost the entire progression becomes unusable for that new assignment.

This creates an unnecessary penalty for adapting to balance changes that players did not request or control. Players are expected to reorganize presets after BR updates, but the current crew system punishes that reorganization by making long-term vehicle-specific progression dependent on maintaining the same crew slot permanently.

I am not asking for general crew skills to become transferable. Skills such as Keen Vision, Reloading, Agility or Vitality can remain attached to the individual crew.

The requested change concerns only the vehicle-specific progression toward Ace qualification.

Proposed solution

Ace qualification research progress should follow the vehicle, rather than the exact vehicle–crew pairing.

When a vehicle is assigned to another crew of the same nation:

  • its accumulated Ace qualification RP should transfer with it;
  • completed Ace qualification should remain available for that vehicle, provided the new crew has the required qualification;
  • crew skill levels should remain unchanged and crew-specific.

A more limited alternative would be to provide a temporary free crew-transfer period for vehicles affected by official BR changes. However, making Ace progress vehicle-based would be a clearer and more permanent solution.

Official BR adjustments will continue to change the composition of lineups. Players should be able to adapt their presets without sacrificing hundreds of thousands of vehicle-specific progression points accumulated over many battles.

Ace qualification progress should represent experience gained with the vehicle, not a permanent obligation to keep that vehicle in one crew slot forever.

I think this proposal has great reference value

When a vehicle’s BR is changed, and especially when it is increased, you should be able to transfer your crew to another slot without losing ace crew progress

Yes, any this kind of compensation would be fine.

The crew skills should definitely nowadays be attached to the vehicle. (Although they may need changing a bit to make this relevant).
It was an ok game mechanic at the start of War Thunder, but with so many thousands(?) of additional vehicles and with now frequent BR changes, it doesn’t make sense the way it is now.

(they should also give at least 8 or so crews to start with to make big lineups that can be useful for the random nature of the maps/game styles/player teammates that you get given with no choice)

Nothing new.
The whole crew system is an archaic mechanic that needed a complete overhaul years ago.

I agree. Frequent BR changes have made the current system increasingly frustrating.

Every time a vehicle changes BR, I end up reorganizing my presets to keep my lineups balanced. The least disruptive option often means moving a vehicle to another crew slot, but that also means sacrificing a lot of crew progression. Players shouldn’t be punished for balance changes that are completely outside their control.

You realistically dont need 11 crew slots. I have 7 and i never spawned more than 9 times in a game. Simply you cant have enough SP or the game lasting that long to go through them all. I suggest making your crew layouts better. And if something changes BR in your lineup, you just throw it away and replace it with something else.

Like as an example here,if Ersatz got moved to 6.3,i´d throw it out of the lineup and replace it with Panther F.

I think we’re talking about two different issues.

I’m not saying everyone needs 11 crew slots. My point is that frequent BR changes force players to reorganize their lineups if they want to keep using the same vehicles.

When moving a vehicle to a different crew slot is the best solution, you end up sacrificing a large amount of accumulated crew experience. That’s what I think should be improved. Players shouldn’t lose long-term progression because of official BR adjustments.

“Crews” should follow the vehicle regardless of where they are in a lineup.

I have each crew slot dedicated to a specific role (#1light/medium, #2 assault/SPG, #3 SPAA, and #4 CAS for example) to avoid this problem. That way it is only figuring out a lineup and not a choice of moving vehicles.
I even have a spreadsheet to keep track of it all. /shame

That’s actually very similar to how I organize mine.

For me, crew slots 1–8 are dedicated to ground vehicles, while 9–11 are for aircraft (or helicopters ). It works reasonably well most of the time.

The problem is that some BRs have so many viable vehicles now that even eight ground crews aren’t always enough. It’s not because I expect to spawn every vehicle in a single match. It’s about having more options depending on the map, game mode, and what my teammates are doing.

That’s also why frequent BR changes become so frustrating—they often force me to reorganize those carefully planned lineups.

Hello tankers,

I completely agree with this proposal. I would also like to add another suggestion: it should be possible to remove a vehicle qualification from a crew.

Due to all the BR changes and line-up reorganizations over the years, I now have several vehicles that are qualified on multiple crews. It would be useful to be able to revoke those unnecessary qualifications and, at the same time, recover the Crew XP that was invested in them.

Have a great day, everyone.

Your proposal is also excellent and Im inclined to have us take the first step.

Thanks. Actually, this is the first time I’ve commented on a War Thunder forum to suggest a potential improvement. However, I have no idea how to get this idea considered by Gaijin.
