The strategic guideline of the Chinese military in the new era is to win a conventional local war under modern technological conditions, especially high-tech conditions. In future battles, the confrontation between two armies is not only about the quantity and quality of individual offensive and defensive weapons and equipment, but more importantly, it is about the competition of high-tech weapons and equipment systems. The coordinated development of the weapons and equipment system of the Chinese Army’s armored forces urgently requires a new generation of tracked infantry fighting vehicles that can accompany new main battle tanks in combat and have amphibious combat capabilities and the ability to conduct independent operations. After years of thorough research and careful argumentation by relevant departments and industrial sectors, it was unanimously determined that the technical approach for developing China’s new generation of infantry fighting vehicles is to introduce the vehicle body technology of the Russian BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle and the Bakhcha-U combat module technology, and carry out domestic research and development; the chassis system is independently developed based on China’s actual situation and needs. After years of negotiations, China and Russia officially signed a license transfer contract for the production of the entire BMP-3 weapon system and the introduction of the Bakhcha-U combat module technology in December 1996. After the contract took effect, both sides immediately entered the performance stage of the contract. The Russian side transferred all technical data to China. In 2000, two Russian-made BMP-3s with the Bakhcha-U combat module were tested and accepted at a Chinese test range. In 2001, the qualification and test range acceptance tests of the domestic production performance prototype were completed. At the same time, in view of the missing product design calculation data in the introduced technical data and the needs of domestic research and development work, supplementary design work aimed at studying the product design ideas and methods of the Russian side was carried out.

Its chassis is derived from the original Russian BMP-3. The UTD-29M liquid-cooled diesel engine provides power, with an output of 500 hp and a power-to-weight ratio of 25 hp/ton. The engine is placed in the rear of the vehicle. The transmission is a four-speed Starlight type with one reverse gear. The first two wheels at the front and the last wheel at the rear each have a telescopic hydraulic double-acting shock absorber to enhance ride smoothness. The ground clearance of the BMP-3 is 0.51 meters. The BMP-3 can reach a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour on paved roads and travel at an average speed of 45 kilometers per hour off-road. The reverse speed on paved roads is 20 kilometers per hour. The BMP-3 can climb over a vertical wall 0.8 meters high and cross a trench 2.5 meters wide.
The armor sections of the BMP-3 are made of ABT-102 alloy. The frontal upper part is 18mm thick, the front side is 60mm thick, the rear crew compartment cover is 15mm thick, the rear part of the hull is 13mm thick, the bottom of the hull is 10mm thick AMG-6, the middle and rear side of the hull is 43mm thick, the bottom of the side is 15mm thick, the lower part of the hull is 43mm thick, the frontal lower part is 10mm thick BT-70Sh, with a 70mm gap and 60mm ABT-102. The upper part of the splash guard is 10mm thick BT-70Sh, with a 70mm gap and 12mm thick BT-70Sh, and 60mm ABT-102.
The turret is made of aluminum alloy armor plate welding, and the outside is draped with a ring of steel armor, the front of the turret can withstand 30mm AP attack within 300m distance, and the Angle of attack is 40°, the side and back of the turret can resist 7.62mm bullets within 30mm, and the top of the turret can be at a distance of 50m. Resist 7.62mm bullets at an Angle of incidence of 20°.
The main armament is a Type 2A72 30mm Cannon and a Type 2A70 100mm low-bore smoothbore gun, supported by a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun with a Bakhcha-U weapon system, weighing 3.7 tons. It can fire 100mm HE and 9M117M 100mm gun-launched missiles, 30mm AP, 30mm HEI and 30mm HET. The amount of spare ammo is the same as that of bmp3.
It has a laser rangefinder, bidirectional stabilizer, night vision, no projectile smoke launcher.

Shame it doesn’t have thermals being an early Bakhcha-U prototype, but still a pretty neat addition for wt.

Seems to be a good addition to the Chinese battle rating 9.0 lineup.

Wondering does it has the Sodema sight

+1. This would make a good BP or premium vehicle.
