Bigger Maps in Ground Battle

When it comes to br.9.0 and above we definitely need bigger maps where we cannot see and shoot into the opponents spawn area from our own spawn area, after we already have instant range finders.

We have potent aa to protect us from aircraft, and western countries will be getting new and better aa systems than adats.

I’ve been grinding the T-34-85 event, and during these events when I’m frequently playing long sessions, certain minor flaws come into acute focus.

War Thunder does many things well, in my opinion the developers have done an excellent job recreating the vehicles, how they sound, move, operate etc. However I feel like the environments have been sorely neglected.

I feel like we’ve ended up in a situation where the maps are funnelling players into 400m-600m games of whackamole, where the game is one by the team that can withstand the most boredom and successfully ambush the enemy that loses patience and starts driving again. All this I can deal with tho.

I think my main issue with the size and layout of maps is that it’s nearly impossible for players to disengage from a fight.

  • For a start, the maps are too small to outrun your enemy,
  • if you’re in a particularly fast tank you might get to cover but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to hide.
  • finally you better turn your engine off otherwise everyone in a ~100m -ish radius is going to hone in you. (players have engine sound detection down to a fine enough art that it’s like watching someone with an aimbot, I’ll play an ASU-57 and be running behind a ridge line and see all the turrets following my like they’re locked on)

I don’t know if the solution is big maps either, we’ve got plenty of large maps with are in many ways kind of awful too.

P.S. War Thunder is getting better though, one of the best changes I saw in the history of war thunder maps was when they actually modelled the road embankments in the Eastern Europe Map, I like to Joke that war thunder finally graded their roads because there’s clearly defined drains and then rills either side of the road were excess material would have been left following the maintenance grading and resheeting (I digress), it’s staple part of rural road construction for as long as there have been roads, and these organic features are missing. They’re important because the add to the quality of the simulation, I mean what’s the point of recreating these amazing vehicles in astonishing detail if we’re going to be fighting in environments that are poor simulacrums of the real world.

I mean once you notice that the maps are all brutally flat, and that the roughness of the terrain with rocks the tank back and forth is a simulated rhythm, it starts taking a toll on your suspension of disbelief. Maps like Cargo Port, Advance to the Rhine, Sun City and Space port have sections so flat that they’d never drain water, why is my tank bouncing around like I’m driving on a corrugated dirt road?

I CANT believe Stona actually closed this innocent discussion for a while, dude is on a rampage😭😭😭

This can be seen as an existing thread but… we already have so many duplicate Kh38 abrams arhs etc etc threads, let’s keep this one

Same as night battles, there should be a switch to choose big-small maps.

Bro DOES NOT know how to keep to himself

Well the addition of new maps that offer more pathways and are bigger in size is what a lot of players are pushing for, especially for top tier game play.

I’m not really satisfied with my previous comment, there’s so much that goes into map design that I struggle to pull it all together in a comment.

My point was that it’s not simply a number of paths or a size we need to contend with, I also think that are current maps are working surprisingly well all things considered. I still play the odd early access game and it’s easy to forget what Broken actually means the way people throw it around.

I truly hope that War Thunder experiments with a larger scale than we’ve ever seen before, something approaching the scale of the Air Enduring confrontation maps. Building on the scale of the enduring confrontation, I personally think that a map lifted of 1-10m lidar would suffice as the bones with some villages or maybe a small town, some dense forests, streams etc, an approximation of a rural road network and any cliffs, hills or ridges. My theory is, that there’s an underlying problem of the games geographic environment. We’ve got accurately modelled vehicles and physics, sitting on top of a inaccurate model of the environment, specifically in that the devs have approximated what a video game map should have been and in doing so inadvertently created the war thunder game meta. This might seem like bullshit, but when you consider that certain tanks thrive while others struggle to find a place, I think a certain element of that could be put down to map design. I think if we just used more organic/natural terrain and environments, we might see a broader variety of viable gameplay emerge.

I like big maps and I can not lie…

I would like bigger maps, but not for your reasons.

First of all, the problem isn’t exactly with map size. For example, Maginot Line (I think it’s up to 10.7, so no toptier) is a very big map. Yet, it’s still hated by almost everyone.

Because it’s designed badly. You constantly have to deal with some idiots who try to sit at two small ridges and shoot ATGMs at 2-3 kilometers. And later, everyone sits there with LRFs.

This is a bad design, and honestly, it feels bad for both sides. The so-called “snipers” are actively trying to use missiles, which have very random damage and awful handling. The “targets” have to find an ATGM launcher sticking out from the hill in 2 km. Considering most tanks have 10x zoom at max, it’s kind of difficult.

So big maps aren’t going to solve the issue, especially if it’s going to be another flat plane. Maybe the solution to Pantsir insta-locking planes from the spawn is to allow spawning at the airfield.

I heard we will be getting new maps this coming update, anyone have any info?

There is one new air map and 2 ground map visual updates, do not rely on gaijin to make good maps, new or reworked.

Where can we have a look at the ground maps?

Dev server, many on youtube have also shown the VGU for Kuban and Berlin

I will have a look on youtube.

+1 It’s better to have a map selector ,classify by big map/small map, so that everyone can continue their own combat style
