Battle of the Atlantic: Ships Against Submarines!

I support!
My only issue is the very low crush depth, having submarines that could dive over 200 meters explode at 60-65 is just sad

well it does go to 88m but not for very long and only in absolutely flawless comdition

And even at 55m or so a depth charge vaguely nearby will cause ‘crush depth exceeded, you is dead.’

As noted previously, the 3-5m depth exploit is just stupid and why on earth would you ever design it that way? Surfaced speed applies on the surface and once your not surfaced and need hatches closed to stop the sea coming in, you’re running on electric at submerged speed. What’s so hard about that? But in this event the silliness kind of balances the DD’s ability to charge around at 40+kts and still hear anything, when, IIRC, anything above 16-18 kts makes it impossible to hear a contact above the sound of water turbulence under the ship’s hull.

I notice that there is no wake from a submarine when parts of it (eg periscope, or railings, cannon) are breaking the surface.

As a DD player I’d recommend engaging every contact you see with guns. You might not do much if the sub is at periscope depth, but it will get marked for any Catalina. Teamwork, as RL ASW. As a U-boat player your worst enemy are the utter dregs who you’ll be teamed with. You might get some quick separation from the spawn point, which the DDs will certainly be bearing down on, but just to give those DDs a hint, a couple nearby ‘comrades’ will likely surface and spam 20mm at the distant DDs. Now the DDs know exactly where to head, having almost missed you.

It seems very RNG, had my hull evaporate itself the second i hit 60m and sometimes ive gone to 70

Actually it shouldn’t be. The submarine can run its diesel engines at that depth since its exhaust and air intakes are outside the water so it can go full speed on diesel instead of having to move using the batteries while submerged

I believe that the diesel engine can be operated in a semi-submerged state when the conning tower is above water at a depth of 1 to 2 m. However, it is unrealistic that the game allows the diesel engine to run when the conning tower is mostly submerged at a depth of 4 m. There should not be a snorkel.

The submarine event is nice. It makes me worried for the addition of submarines in the main game, however. Because the balance is so “razor’s edge” in this gamemode it doesn’t feel like they can be added to the main game without either major changes or their own unique mode. Submarines would work very well in Naval EC, but not Naval RB or AB as it is now.

Yes, while the tower is above surface it makes sense; if there was a snorkel it would make sense down to periscope/snorkel depth. At 1-2m the conning tower is clearly above the surface; I’d need to double check 3m, but I suspect there might be a serious risk of taking on water; at 4m+ the tower is underwater and there’s no snorkel. These WT U-boats are effectively late-/post-war diesel-electrics with no need to ever truly surface.

Not sure if something got tweaked or I just got better but I was able to finish the achievement in single battle for German side too.

I don’t know tbh but I believe the same, subs are playable now

first day my sub exploded at 58m and yesterday I could go to 88m and stay there easily

besides that speed at debth is also a lot higher now than on the first day

overall now it’s fair and a lot of fun

I want to give my two cents here too.
I love the event, I like the submarines, but there are still some issues, which have been talked about quite enough here.
Some balancing issues, active/passive sonar, stealth mode, etc. need to be implemented.
The new torpedo mode is amazing, I want this on the bigger ships, so blue water, and coastal can stay the same.
I also kinda like the mixing of arcade and realistic, something that could become a standard.
Also, more modern submarines would be a welcoming change, at least in my personal opinion

Played the US side now and its much harder to kill submarine. Maybe players got better at it or something got tweaked in the background. And Catalinas having 800SP cost is definitely fair.

Bet the Kriegsmarine wished these were this tanky.
With the compartment system and the amount required to cripple a sub any coastal vessel that is gonna have to rely on guesstimates and doesn’t score a direct hit to hull break with the limited amount they carry may as well not waste a spawn in the future.

They are definitely better than at the very beginning, but it’s still miserable. For some reason they still commit ritual suicides in a shallow depth.

When I play with a submarine, I use this tactic:
image
I try to get as close as possible (mostly surfaced - I can manage 44 km/h speed) to the line where the convoy will go and then I will make a mine barrier at the firing position. I fire several torpedoes at the cargo ships and the moment the enemy destroyers approach, I sink to a depth of approximately 56 meters. Of course, destroyers try to throw depth charges on me, but they can´t thanks to mine barrier, and quite often some unwary destroyer also gets caught in that mines. Then, when the destroyers disperse a bit, I go again to a depth of 7 meters from where I finish the convoy and possibly destroyers if they are at an ideal angle and at a distance.

If the match type doesnt give any SL reward. Why am I getting a prompt for “purchase necessary ammo for vehicles”. And this isnt even just a few SL, but 18k. Cant seem to be able to join a match if the ammo isnt purchased.

My personal two cents:

I’m not grinding for the TOG, just not interested in it at all…

Giving up my grinding routine to play Subs wich are one of the cancerous classes in another game?

Heck no🤣

After playing a bit this is the most fun i have Had in ages!

Dive to the max depth, flank the enemies torpedo one or two vessels, lay some mines and dive again xd

Or just mess around

This is a great event, hope we will get some submarine trees once

I hope they add more torpedos if they add subs sooner or later to the game.

At the moment we have a G7e with a nerfed range (probably for gameplay)
These should be spottet later than other torpedos due to the electric engine

The G7a which could choose between speed and range but has with 5km a much higher speed. These types of torpedos should be spottet earlier
(44 knots at 5,000m; 40 knots at 7,500m; 30 knots at 12,500m || german boats can already choose between the 44 and 30 knots mode but the middle mode would be interesting aswell)

Torpedos with meandering patters or circle pattern would be cool aswell for german subs. Maybe even acoustic homing torpedos.

I like the gamemode with another tasks to win like defending/attacking convoys. Hope for more gamemodes like these for air, ground and naval

I’m going to copy across what I posted on reddit, as my sort of feedback in regards to submarines as they are in the current event and what I think could be added/removed prior to them being put into naval proper:

So we’ve got the uboat vs destroyers event now which is quite possibly a test run for the introduction of submarines into naval. I think this has the opportunity to be a lot of fun, but there are a number of tweaks that I think might be needed before they are added.

Uboats

Longer dive times, option for Crash dive similar to the Blow Ballast option (r)

Harder for AI spotters to spot at distance/weather conditions/night

Can hear enemy destroyers/freighters when dived, the slower the speed the longer the range. Options for researchable sonar upgrades (GHG to KDB to Balkon, etc)

Dive deeper than 60m

Give deck gun back

Longer range torpedoes than 2000m.

No deck gun or AAA gun when mostly underwater.

Rear torpedo tube for torpedoes, mines optional loadout.

Destroyers

Passive Sonar has a longer range the slower the ship travels, at flank speed it could run over a stereo and not hear it

ASDIC fairly well implemented in game, be sure that there’s the blind spot underneath though.

Depth charges need to be manually set between shallow, medium and deep

Hedgehogs where historical

Radar where historical?

General

In RB Naval, seperate spawn points for submarines that aren’t visible from the enemys spawn like current surface spawns are.

Submarines will probably be more useful in Enduring confrontation like bombers are

If the goal is to attack a convoy, then submarines should have the chance to get ahead of the convoy and dive. Will stop the destroyers spawn camping the submarines?

Special submarines, Surcouf, I-400 (launches planes like Battleships do in game now), maybe HMS X1? Gyro-copter for later uboats?

The bigger the submarine the longer the dive time.

Dive times, torpedo reloads and such can be affected by crew skills

Radar for submarines where historical, radar detection for subs where historical

Radar for anti submarine aircraft?

Night battles? Spotlights, star shells? Big disadvantage for ships without radar though (Cape Matapan).

Different torpedoes for different navies, but limited by BR, so a Type VIIA at a lower battle rating than a VIIC/42 wouldn’t be able to carry G7es homing torpedoes.

Foxer noise makers for Destroyers at the right BR, BOLD for uboats

Yeah you can go quite fast but when I surface Im being spammed by salvos from Fletchers :D
