Battle of the Atlantic: Ships Against Submarines!

im really liking the uboats wen do you think we can get them in the main game?

Event is fun, but it just proves what myself and others have been saying for years. Submarines (at least ones from before about 1952) just aren’t going to work in regular battles without huge changes, and I mean changes that Gaijin simply doesn’t seem willing to do, at least for other modes. They’re simply too slow, too weak, and in some cases, too poorly armed to be anything more than a hinderance to their team. Right now some of the problems with the Type VII can be fixed, but that wouldn’t change much overall.

Special events is where they belong, they work well there. This one is fairly fun, looking forward to more sub events in the future, just not any in random battles.

very broken to Uboat, u die faster, and the points… very hard, metods to u buy whit GE the missions, not playing.

I like almost everything about this, and can see it working with some minor changes in both naval EC and every day naval.

The biggest issue i have is the subs inability to dive deeper then 60-70m, subs should be able to dive out of range of depth charges and surface active sonar detection… for game balance it doesnt need to be a changing depth based on water temps (like in real life) but could just be a fixed depth, like say 100m maybe? Makes then undetectable by active sonar, but still makes them detectable to passive so surface ship can tell rough area based on how fast sub is moving, but doesnt get the little blue outline that active sonar gives.

The balancing of this: subs are useless at those depths, all they can do is hide, they can’t launch torpedos(except at other subs) and they cant launch mines.
capture points can have a “max depth” so you need to either a) be on the surface or b) within depth of active sonar and depth charges, to capture the points.
Spawn points can have a shallow sea floor…or honestly could even be left alone except for the map revealing that ground spawns have.

Subs can also have a reduced or similiar detection range on the surface as coastal boats, and be all but undetectable (based on speed) at periscope depth… they could also have a larger detectable/silhouette to planes as v.s. surface ships… it would make captapult launched planes have a possibly more impactful roll, similiar to UAVs in ground battles.

  • these suggestions exclude ships with sonar or atleast the sonar aspect of ships. And are just ment for the visual identification of enemies that all ships already have.

As for the event itself, it’d be nice if the spawns were a bit further apart, i feel like spawning in the enemy is all but right ontop of me. As a sub it’s hard to get within the 2km range of my torpedos to attack the cargo ships without having an escort already ontop of me after just spawning.

And as an escort, hunting the sub is half the fun for me, having it spawn right infront of me and at this point it just drops mines and dives and waits for me to get close and hopefully hit a mine, is kind of…boring?

Where’s the cat and mouse game of thr sub trying to remain undetected v.s. the sub chaser?

The event us very fun and I can’t wait to see subs for other nations added to the normal tech trees.

I have only a few complaints.

  • The sonar in the Fletcher just feels too good. Getting the whole visual outline of the submarine just feels like wall hacks. If you’re going to stick with the outline, it should be a lot more vague. Otherwise it should be its own kind of widget like radar.
  • Either the hydrophone is too strong or the subs are too loud. I suspect the electric engines aren’t modeled so I’m going to say the submarines are too loud since we only have the diesel engines right now.
  • This is a big one. When playing the surface ships I randomly lose the ability to respawn after only a single death or only 2 deaths. This is ridiculous and should be addressed.
  • The submarines have no hydrophone or sonar. When you’re under water you have zero means of detecting the enemy apart from the map. The ability to use an active ping or watch your passive sonar would help greatly.
  • Submarines under water cannot detect each other. That is we don’t have name tags for friendly players if you’re below the surface. I understand long range communications underwater can be quite complicated but we should be able to see each other over short distances.

Other than that the event is fun. I’m enjoying submarines and I can’t wait to see more.

They go as fast as most surface ships when not submerged? =/ 40-50 kts is not a “slow amount” by any stretch…hell some boats only go 25-30 kts max

They’re kinda like the bombers of the sea world and i feel they’d work in a similiar fashion.

Yeah, the spawns are too close together and the visual detection range is a bit high, i think subs on sirfa e should have similiar detection as coastal boats…which maybe they do? But the spawns are so close it doesnt matter

Huh? Are you trying to say that subs go as fast as surface ships when not submerged? Torpedoes? Torpedoes yeah, that’s the point of them. But submarines no, the Type VII goes 13 knots surfaced.
They’re like bombers absolutely, in the sense that they’re both slow, vulnerable, and useless.

I would also like to say that I personally feel that the destroyers are able to turn cartoonishly tight

very good event, love it ,thanks!!!

Did you play submarines? Because they can go easily 44 km/h when they are not submerged what is faster then some ships. Btw its even not truth what you say about bombers but this topic is not about it.

Btw Type VII speed surfaced irl is 16-18.6 knots (29-35 km/h) surfaced. Of course in game is some speed buff but it is same for all vessels.

Skill issue

Yeah exactly :D

The submarines come to normal techtree in the future?

I hope. I want mainly Soviet K-class submarine.

Yea me too. I hope for the naval battles get modern era and i can use the ids tornado later f18, su33 etc… and come to new weapons like anti ship missles etc…

We already have Volna-M missiles which can be used both anti air and anti ship, and they are amazing.

Now I may be very bad with subs but how exactly do I get to know if I can launch a torpedo ?
If I aim with the periscope, it calculates a lot of things that I don’t understand but then … what’s next ? I can’t seem to find any lead indicator for torpedoes.
Even if I could find a lead indicator, turning the entire sub towards the ennemy is kinda hard without being at full speed.

Any tips ?

Most likely yes. They put lot of effort into submarine stuff in general. Also, its known that these events are like beta tests…
