BAe Harrier II (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion

I think

Like that’s gonna happen

I doubt Britain will ever get MMW, not until more fictional Russian missiles come

Now that we’ve got some good images of the Typhoon missiles, would it be worth me suggesting them to gaijin?

Thats because ASRAAM wont fit in the F-35 bays

They can but they’re the same effective size as AMRAAMs

I meant the side bays that the IR missiles are usually mounted in. :)

I think we don’t have to worry about that too much IRL. The British claimed that wanted lots of “cheaper” jets in the 90s-2010s but just ended with less than 40 and won’t buy anymore because they are lazy and poor

It was specifically designed to fit inside F-22 / F-35 weapons bays. The decision for the US to pull out of ASRAAM was entirely political.

Why do RAF and FAA F-35s carry them on wingtips?
I was under the impression F-35 is speced for 9X

They can’t use AIM-9X from the bays yet either.

But as always the question whether it will be done in future is down to money
Certifying ASRAAM for the bays is a whole separate series of trials and associated costs.

Internal ASRAAM carriage was planned, but got cancelled due to budgetary constraints (the trials needed to clear a weapon for carriage are expensive).

We famously don’t have much money as a country right now lol.

So are the FAA F-35s really equipped with nothing more than AMRAAMS and a laser guided bomb?

They have external ASRAAM, just not internal.

Ahh ok so at least they get something British lol.

Despite that a lot of the technology that went into the F-35 is of British origin lol

I believe Meteor is currently undergoing trials for internal bays too, sure I seen a photo of it.

Who knows but this the harrier thread and I’d love a Gr.9 and FA.2 with ASRAAM

Think they would do an FA2 late just for the asraam? Not sure how I would feel about that but I don’t want the current FA2 going up to some silly BR.

Yes FA.2 late IG lol

It had a trial in the US finally, but its still part of P4E. Unfortunately due to us being refused the source code, we couldn’t do it here in the UK as was agreed in the contract specifically under the ‘maintain and upgrade’ part. Meteor integration is currently this year, 10 years behind the original schedule. By the time of P4E that will be 15-17 years behind schedule… Conveniently P4E is also when the first US competitor to Meteor will also be integrated…

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions from that information.

Yes plus external carriage ASRAAM, and there’s still no Anti-ship option planned either. We also aren’t sure if the new JSM missile based on the NSM missile the UK already uses would fit in the F-35B as it has smaller bays.
