ASM-2 Type 93 ( 93式空対艦誘導弾)
The ASM-2 is a Japanese anti-ship missile used since 1995.It was used by the F-1, F-2, F-4EJ Kai, P-3C and, according to some sources (1 source), the F-15J.
History
Work on the ASM-2 rocket began in 1986. This missile was supposed to complement the older ASM-1 missile. Patents used in the ASM-1 and SSM-1 rockets were used to develop it. The main purpose of the new anti-ship missile was to increase the range and accuracy. The development costs amounted to about 11.8 billion yen. The first prototypes were already in 1988, full-scale tests were carried out between 1990 and 1993. In the same year, the missile was accepted into service under the name “Type 93 Air-to-Ship Guided Munitions” or ASM-2.
Structure description
In appearance and external construction, the ASM-2 looks very similar to the ASM-1. The biggest changes took place inside:
- Changed the engine to a TJM2 turbojet,
- Infrared guidance is used
- The missile can choose the place of attack on its own, such as a bridge or engine rooms.
The winging wrap is the same as in the ASM-1, except that stealth technologies are used, i.e. they absorb the radio waves of the enemy ship, which makes it difficult to detect the missile. In addition, due to the engine nozzle, an air intake has been added from the bottom. The warhead was made of a new explosive material, i.e. an explosive charge based on a PBX with excellent LOVA properties. In addition, thanks to the change of the engine, it was possible to increase the weight of the warhead to 225 kg.
General characteristics
- Length: 4,00 cm
- Wing Span: 1,20 cm
- Diameter: 0,35 cm
- Weight: 530 kg
- Main Engine: TJM2 Turbojet Engine
- Max Speed: 1 150km/h
- Guidance Method:Inertial guidance, infrared image guidance
- Range: 144 km or 170 km
- Warhead: HE 225kg
Usage on aircraft
- Mitsubishi F-1 - two ASM-2 missiles under the wings (rarely used due to the poor radar of the F-1 aircraft, which resulted in a poor range of the missile)
- F-4EJ Kai - two ASM-2 missiles under the wings
- Mitsubishi F-2 -vfour ASM-2 missiles under the wings
- F-15J - ?
- P-3C - two ASM-2 missiles under the wings
- T-4 - One rocket under the hull
Summary
The ASM-2 missile is a very interesting Japanese missile capable of striking naval targets at long distances. It will be perfect for naval battles in the future and now for air battles. It allows you to destroy naval targets and possibly land targets from a safe distance. In the upgraded variant, the ASM-2(b) has a GPS system that allows it to hit ground targets (this will be my future suggestion). I encourage you to discuss in the comments and to share your own knowledge on this topic.
Finally, I apologize for the linguistic and logical errors because unfortunately English is not my main language and I had to use google translator.
