Artillery damage - Hit probability of single VS group of tanks

How is it that so regularly you can drop artillery on a group of 5 or 6 enemy tanks clumped together (on a cap for instance) and you might be LUCKY to get a single hit, yet more often when arty is dropped on a single tank, it results in a direct hit and kill? And yes, I do watch to see that the enemy are still in the same spot when the arty actually lands and most still are. Is it something to do with screwed up coding or just REALLY bad luck because the odds would suggest that a bunch of tanks clumped together should sustain more hits and kills. I know artillery is pretty random but I’m wondering if others find this happening too.

It depends on how far u are from the arty point (further u are = the less accurate) and it will only be lethal to light tanks. Medium andd Heavy tank need direct hit to kill them. But it mostly comes down to luck. Most of the time you are going to get hits or track the enemy tank and nothing else. These artilery shell arent that big either, im not sure what calibre they are but im assuming around ~150mm HE

I’ve had limited success with arty. On one hand, 99% of the time it doesn’t do much more than take out the occasional track. On the other, it has come in handy when I’m in a pinch.
With it being very cheap to dump crew points into for better call time and accuracy, it is viable in the sense that it can give you free kills if you do happen to get lucky with it. Obviously, at top tier it loses a lot of its luster because you just don’t see any open top tanks, which means you need direct hits. But when spammed at choke points or even just as audio cover it can be useful.

(and no, I don’t think the accuracy goes up when targeting single tanks. You probably are just getting really lucky imo)

I once killed a maus in my m22 using arty, and i felt bad for him

My arty works as i would expect…RNG is big but i expect it…

Sometimes i get a kill, usually i get hits…and i get way more hits when i target places with more than one enemy…
Also more efficient vs open top targets…as expected.

BUT…i dont get a SURE kill when i target open tops and i sometimes get a kill vs a hard target…
Of course that it works both ways…i do run away from artillery markers so i assume most players will if able…kills/deaths are either from bad RNG or the inability to run away…
