Are we forced to buy premiums at a certain point?

Am I the only one who feels rank VI is the absolute worst tier for every single tech tree in the game?

I’m not talking about the vehicles and balancing, which also face problems. I’m mainly talking about how the RP requirements just JUMPS around ranks V-VII. Ground and Naval are specially bad, air is somewhat manageable.

Let’s take a look at some ground tech trees and ignore vehicles foldered under others. This is the total RP cost to go down each line in each rank.

Sweden
Rank V, 8 vehicles: 802,000 RP
Rank VI, 9 vehicles: 1,625,000 RP
823,000 RP difference

USSR
Rank V, 12 vehicles: 1,194,000 RP
Rank VI, 13 vehicles: 2,135,000 RP
941,000 RP difference

France
Rank V, 8 vehicles: 842,000 RP
Rank VI, 9 vehicles: 1,485,000 RP
643,000 RP difference

These are only some examples. Of course a few trees stay somewhat “consistent” or numbers can vary because one rank has much more vehicles than the others. But taking a look at those cases:

China
Rank V, 6 vehicles: 615,000 RP
Rank VI, 9 vehicles: 1,570,000 RP
955,000 RP difference, but hey there’s a 3 vehicle difference. Here’s the thing, on average each of those 3 would need 318k RP each. For rank 6 vehicles, which need 220k MAX in every single tech tree in the game.

USA
Rank V, 7 vehicles: 637,000 RP
Rank VI, 10 vehicles: 1,625,000 RP
988,000 RP difference, but hey there’s also a 3 vehicle difference. However, on average they need 329k RP each (for rank 6 vehicles!). Those are late rank VII prices lmao.

The RP modifiers just don’t scale REMOTELY the same. At one rank you need 200-300 matches on average to unlock everything there and a lineup in the next rank. While in this next rank you need over 600 to do the same. Unless, of course, you empty your pockets

I also want to point out how it seems Gaijin is waiting to release some vehicles just because they want to release their premium counterpart.

  • F-18A was 2 years late at a minimum, C was around 1 year if not more. Why did we have to wait so long for them? Oh, right, premium packs needed to reach a certain point where they could put a premium F-18 out

  • F-2 is also kinda late and has been in leak lists and predictions for a long time, it doesn’t have anything that crazy worth making us wait that long. Oh yeah, it’s coming with a premium version

  • Now I ask you, where are the other versions of the J-10? Just watch as we get a tech tree C and premium B for example.

I feel sad about naval as I wanted to play that mode but the grind is the worst in the entire game. The same as ground happens but rewards are even worse lol. USS Roanoke to USS Texas is a 205k RP difference Colosus to Rodney is 170k and so on so on.

AFAIK thats due to these vehicles being the old “top tier”.

Im gonna have a spicy take here, and im fully prepared for the hate im gonna get.

On one hand, it actually forces new players to learn some of the mechanics not found in lower tiers because they have to spend more time playing.

On the other, if you already know those mechanics and just want to grind a new tier, its basically unmanagable without premium.

Issue that could simply be fixed by the research bonus introduced by Gaijin. If it wasnt so terrible lol.

My only issue in those BRs is the repair cost, as someone whose been F2P before realising I can sell event vehicles for GJN, rank 6 is the absolute worst. Especially for newer players, it can be difficult to actually turn an SL profit from those games, not to mention the vehicles aren’t exactly cheap or quick (enough) to research

Rank 6 (and to a certain extent, most Rank 7 countries) are my least favourite to grind through for that reason. Extremely expensive for almost no reason (beyond being “old top tier”), and most of those planes are just either dreadful or are places in an awkward position that you cannot do much about. Barely any to no flares or chaff facing off against superior missiles (9.3-9.7 constantly fighting 9Ls and R-60Ms), can sorta dog fight but not fast enough to fight anyone or vice versa (too fast to dogfight), all while having terrible missiles (AIM 9Bs and such) facing half decent radar missiles. It’s a dreadful Rank with expensive prices, and the only thing keeping you going is the fact you’re five planes away from getting a F-15, a MiG 29, a Su-27, F-16, or any other good jet.

I think the ground progression is just fundamentally bad. I do agree that it gets far worse the higher you climb BR-wise, but the overall progression. The foldering of certain vehicles and the reduction of some repair costs was only really a step in the right direction and needs more follow up.

The issue is, Gaijin doesn’t engage with players over such beyond ignoring them. There’s no period during the year do they gauge player satisfaction or impressions on the overall economy.

“Do you think the progression system is fair? Is it too difficult? Is it too easy?” Etc. etc.

Personally, I do not think they care. They sort of self-reported themselves when they dropped their response to the reviww bombinfg a few years. “Players don’t understand how a F2P game works.”

The game isn’t pay-to-win, its pay-for-convenience as the base game is by design, inconvenient. Progression is slow be design. “In addition, progression serves as one of the basics of how a game makes money (basically players pay for acceleration of progression).”

Progression is going to be something Gaijin will almost never take player feedback on again outside of a massive wave of backlash. There’s been almost no polling or survey dev blogs since that backlash. And because they won’t, we are left with the only real thing that makes said progression managable; premium vehicles/time. 2

GRB has some RP issues that can be easily fixing by giving us more RP as a reward.
I never bought a premium vehicle and found the grind to be pretty demanding while using premium account.

That being said, for some reason my ARB research progress has been much, much faster and there you go through the TT noticeably faster.

Absolutely, this game is straight up pay to win and its going to make the grind super easy.

After rank 6 if you arent a pyscho ya you will need premiums + premium time to progress at a manner that isn’t slavery.

Maybe air you can get away with just premium time, but ground/helis and naval is just awful.

I spaded my mig27m in a couple hours this morning, played like dogwater too, and the idea I could do that in a rank 7 tank is laughable.

I completely agree people should learn essential mechanics as they progress. Top tier air RB for example is filled with people who have no idea how missiles or radar work, some even try simulator and the teamkilling is actually insane. People don’t even know what IFF means.

But yeah, 600+ matches is more than enough to learn a new mechanic lol. I also got really disappointed with the research bonus if you have top tier. 5 matches a day is pathetic.

Exactly, I see that as a double-edged sword. Yes, the game is free and we need to buy stuff to keep it up but at the same time I personally know MANY friends who tried getting into the game and dropped it exclusively because the grind is unbearable.

The game has so many issues and they just don’t fix it. I doubt reserving half an year or an entire year to mostly focus on QoL things in this game would piss off the community. Fix balance, grind, economy, bring new features, new game modes, new mechanics etc etc etc. What they do is keep throwing us new content and VERY rapidly squeeze the bag of new shiny vehicles we can get. Current datamines mention 5th gens by summer next year, so after that… what else?

Watching them talking about an infantry game mode when Enlisted exists, not to mention Battlefield 6 won’t take long to be released is pathetic. Their response to the review bombing was pathetic, though I can appreciate some changes.

It just makes me kinda annoyed/sad because I’ve been playing this game for almost a full decade and this is the state it finds itself in. Not that bright of a future ahead.

I see what you mean about being “forced” to buy a premium. I got lucky and rolled a talisman for my Rooikat, so I might survive. But I have been increasingly tempted to drop some money on WarThunder. In my mind I’m thinking “it’s only a couple hours pay”

To be honest what they did is …semi-smart.
It’s not 5 matches.
It’s 5 matches per nation…like…50 games.
But it’s not really helping you if you are focused to one nation , though 50 games are 50 games…most of time someone won’t even play 50 games a day…

If your biggest motivation is to grind, then yeah, kinda forced to pay.

You can avoid premium vehicle, but will need premium time when discounts hits (50% off) + talisman (50% off) or shop random talisman

Or else you will become insane 😊

Play, get cupons, sell cupons, get GJN, buy premiums without spending a penny

No you just to have to get good and have the average game of 1-3 kd

Skill issue. PC Master Race.

yes

0/10 ragebait, try again next time.

🟢 = KD above 2
🟠 = KD below 2 and above 1
🔴 = KD below 1

Yeah, I know my stats are ass I never said I was good. Also, K/D isn’t a 1:1 translator to skill, bro.
Skill is getting 3 kills in a BT-7M at 10.0.
I do wonder what my K/D would look like if I actually played for K/D
If I didn’t respawn when the team was losing,
If I didn’t run the BT-7M and BT-5 in 10.0–12.0,
If I played passively instead of pushing back the enemy faster than my team could even advance…
Maybe when I start Germany or the US, I’ll try playing for stats
But of course, saying all this doesn’t really mean anything.
