Are Eurofighter Typhoons and The Gripen hindered by the Aim 120s they carry

Based off of?

bronchure you posted

Welll, it seems the brochure is after the AIM-120C-5 was made, so would be talking about the AIM-120D having that improved HOBS capability where it can target aircraft behind it.

mmmmh okay

Spoiler

put this in here cause people think C-8 = D

Here’s another one:

Spoiler

If this is post- C-5 then where is our improved kinematics (you can’t just say battery life since it mentions no escape range)

While this is something you could definitely do, it requires you to use Mk1 eyeball so you’d have to get close enough to the target to see them while notching them, so it isn’t anywhere near optimal of what the SM2 can do currently.

It is very very likely that you might have to wait until the Meteor/AMRAAM/IRIS-T for this capability of firing outside of gimbal limits.

IIRC, BVVD said on dev-stream that the AIM-120D has improved kinematics over the AIM-120C because the GPS offers energy-saving guidance, which means less inertial drift that constantly needs to be corrected whether in IOG shots or while being guided on datalink.

and its not like

but yeah in contrary to what people want to believe guidance does make a huge part of a missiles effectiveness

also who is to say nothing got scrapped

Does that actually happen meaningfully in game? It has to help a good amount or something else is involved if they keep saying “improved” and “greater” kinematics

Meaningfully? I doubt it.

Technically it could be a 0.1% improvement in energy-saving guidance and it would still fulfill the improved/greater kinematics meaning. It does beg the question though if other missiles in-game have too low of an IOG drift to the point that GNSS addition isn’t actually very meaningful.

That wouldn’t explain why USAF/USN keeps mentioning an improvement in kinematics, if it was small they wouldn’t emphasize it much

They say nothing comes close, by this point the C-7 and C-5 are out in the world

It might if IOG drift of missiles without GNSS is supposed to worse than they are in-game, even to the point of having some penalties if you don’t provide it datalink.

That’s true, maybe a moderate to heavy IOG nerf would help make it more accurate.

Also a better optimized flight path, GPS could help the missile more accurately loft or dive or go flat

Im aprehensive if that is actually the case. we know from Brimstone that the IOG drift should be a fraction of what it is currently. (Internal bug report for that btw). Wouln’t be surprised if the same was true for other missiles

IOG drift is probably too high for everything, with the whole IOG wobble being semi-nonsense (especially on DL)

Of course drift is accumalitive, so might be higher at very long range than in game

Like Aim-9Ms can be defeated without doing anything but flaring as the Drift is so high that past 2km the drift can cause it to miss.

All amraams have LOAL, they guide with datalink before locking onto the target by themself

I was thinking this. Like if you have two missiles fired over 100km range and no datalink provided after that, just immediate notching and going away from the battlefield, AIM-120D probably should have some advantages there with less correction needed during terminal lock-on.

But what about the NEZ improvement? I think we can all agree the AIM-120 does not have a 100km NEZ

But B/C5s cant be fired outside of the seekers gimball limit which doesnt really make sense, especially when being actively guided via a gimballed radar providing DL, which I think is the core point OP is making
