Anti-Radiation Missiles and Electronic Support Measures!

You can use the ARMs to target naval ships that are with the furthest carrier. If you fire off a full volly at kne ship it might sink and give you a whole 39 mission score.

Or if you get within ~7-8 KM of the enemy AF the SPAA will switch their radar on, but you have to fire more than one because theyll engage munitions now.

On EC maps you can use them to engage SPAA on geound battles, but itll be NATO or Soviet SPAA depending what side you spawn on.

In short, no. This is for top tier ground only.

Yep, which is so stupid its actually rediculous.

Especially given that ARM has been denied to a lot of aircraft at BRs where it would actually be useful to have

Is this still a Work-in-Progress feature? It’s not possible (yet) to see vehicles in a specific radar wavelength band as the mock-up window suggests.

Not in the live server sadly

Was hoping it would permit softening of airfields when people are camping them in RB too. Actually have some reason to pull Su 34 out. But nope, can’t target them effectively.

I believe I saw they removed that ability on purpose.

yea i was looking for the UI but i cant find it, i am now sad

Turns out, after some testing, they’re also useless in ground. With the caveat that them having a use requires them not to be a friendly fire disaster. Half the time displays no information on the target. Especially when loosed from range.

Yeah. Every time i ask about it i just get ignored. Its stupid to put it in the dev blog then to not have it in game and then no moderator acknowledge it when someone brings it to their attention. Either way hit me up in DMs on here and i can send you a chart of what missiles can attack what vehicles

Considering ESM is a separate piece of hardware, the ESM display should be available even after the ARH missiles have been expanded.

I thought it dependa on the aircraft, no? Some aircraft have it integrated, others only use the ARM’s seeker as information source for the ESM?

Having to be careful to avoid friendly fire issues with ARM’s is true to real life though, and is not an unsurmountable challenge given that you can see the vehicles your teammates are using at any point in the scoreboard. A requirement to think things through doesn´t make a weapon useless.

Except ARMs, in real life, are loosed with ELINT systems. Which provide information of the emissions detected. ARMs in real life are also able to be loosed at specific emission types, or at specific positions emissions are detected from. The information is not presented half the time by the munition. Which means you often can’t make well thought out decisions unless you try again, which it has a high probability of not informing you of anything about the detected emission. Again.

The fact information is not presented consistently, coupled with the fact that you cannot correct the detected emission without beginning the acquisition again (chance to detect friendly radars again, even if you’re nowhere near them), makes it less than ideal. Platforms facing threatening AA do not have the luxury of inconsistency, and platforms that are not facing threatening AA have access to far more consistent munitions. ESM does not resolve this inconsistency either, as you get “?” more often than not until you probe the ping with an ARH, and find out it is a friendly platform.

Yeah, but ESM module is envisaged as an ARH targeting system.
Didn’t the targeting display came with ESM modules?
What planes in WT use ARH, but don’t have ESM?
F16 eg. uses AN/ASQ-213 and got extension “J”, otherwise it’s a Block50/52.

Yes, it’s the same issue with also ballistic computers and corresponding symbols on sights / HUD: In many if not most cases, such symbols (like PoI) are only shown as long as one has a weapon suitable for it, then disappears, in some cases along with the whole sight (which would show also navigation relevant info like attitude,…).

The elint systems don’t necessarily present useful information first try; unless the threat is already recorded in a preset database, it takes a few days of analysis to figure out what it actually is. The game provides for a way to select between 3 threat types in the ESM screen, although personally I haven’t seen for myself if that feature is useful or not. You are right about not being able to narrow down the geographical area the seeker will search signals from, especially on ARMs with gps guidance that can fly to a predetermined spot without ever sensing a radar signal, but that was a deliberate omission by the devs in the name of “balance”, not that they really care about that.

It’s a bit different.
Ballistic computer needs to know what to calculate ballistics for, so once outta weapons, nothing to calculate for. AN/ASQ-213 eg. maintains function regardless of the missiles being online. It can still relay targets to shooters over L16, eg.

You do not need gps for this functionality. Distance and bearing can be used to provide positional information. ELINT systems provide a lot more useful information than we’re getting where half the time we just don’t have any useful information to act on. Even simply emission band coverage would provide more use than “?”. In the cramped nature of the game, we require better information to be presented. Modern systems are not being loosed into an environment with allied sams and enemy sams sitting on top of each other.

More than a few aircraft are missing it currently. Like the Typhoons
