AMX-10P (Toucan II)

The AMX-10P is a French-designed family of tracked AFVs originally produced from 1972-1994. in 1981 Indonesia obtained ~34 units for its Marine Corps, these includes three different variant, the AMX-10PAC90 with 90mm, and the AMX-10P with the 20mm cannon or alternatively with the 12.7mm MG. They were primarily brought in to replace the Marines’ Soviet-era amphibious vehicles.
Specifically talking about the 20mm variant is incredibly hard because we don’t have a lot of information on where they’ve went, because they hasn’t been spotted in quite some time. Both the AMX-10PAC-90 & AMX-10P Marine is still being used albeit rarely, but for the 20mm it just disappeared, with almost no images of the vehicle during active service (those two images above are the only in-service photos of them with camos, decals & roundels.
While its in-game performance can be described as the same as the one in the French Tree, this vehicle could help fill the SPAA gap found in the Japanese tree. At Rank IV, with a BR of 6.3 it could work as an alternative to the SUB-I-II.
A. Background
Details
The AMX-10P is a family of tracked APC originally developed for the French Army from 1965 and has since been exported to many different nations. Production started in 1972 and continued untill 1994. During that time around 1,750 units had been produced, with a majority of the produced model being the standard AMX-10P IFV with the 20mm cannon in a two-man turret.
AMX-10P IFV
In the early 80s, the Indonesian Marines wanted to replace its aging fleet of PT-76Bs & BTR-50s obtained during the 60s. As such, in 1981 Indonesia ordered around 34 units of the AMX-10Ps with differing roles, namely the PAC 90 with the 90mm, the IFV with the 20mm and the APC with a 12.7mm. with all types of vehicles fully delivered in 1982-83.
The APC is a specific Indonesian variant that was developed for Indonesian Marine Corps. The AMX-10P “Marine”, as it was called, would feature several improvements to Marine Operations, namely an uprated 6 F11 SRX Engine, anti-corrosion treatment, bilge pumps, as well as a trim vane & watertight inlets/outlets, among other improvements specifically designed to optimize the vehicle for marine operations. This variant would be fitted with the TLI 127 turret armed with a 12.7mm M2HB machine gun. While the APC is a unique Indonesian variant, It’s unclear whether the AMX-10P IFV (Toucan II) is a part of the same upgrade package or not, as such due to a lack of information the IFV will be classified as the standard version instead.
AMX-10P being hoisted down during delivery
The AMX-10P IFV has the M693 F2 autocannon mounted on the Toucan II Turret. Though the vehicle is classified as an IFV, it has a dedicated AA mode for shooting down Aircraft. The cannon has a burst limiter and double feed system to allow quick switching between AP & HE ammo. The gunner has a day & night sight whereas the commander gets a forward periscope as well as a direct-reading gonio-sight for anti-aircraft fire as well as also having a long-range PH9A Searchlight mounted above the gun. The gun is controlled electronically by both the gunner & commander with the commander capable of firing the gun without the gunner.
The vehicle has a gentle torsion bar suspension which includes hydraulic shock absorbers on the outer track sprockets. The transmission includes a torque converter and a single mechanical unit which combines the gear box and steering functions. It also has an epicyclic output gearing and hydraulically-operated disc brakes for skid turns. The gear box comes with 4 forward and 1 reverse (three with synchromesh). The gear change is instantaneous due to the preselector system and the electro-hydraulic action of the clutch lever. with the Torque converter making the vehicle capable of drive from any gear.
The vehicle also has a low ground pressure (530 g/cm²) and track-bite augmented by lateral vanes, making it manouverable on swampy, snowy, and sandy grounds. Additionally its a fully amphibious vehicle capable of conducting maritime operations with its twin hydrojets. The crew of the vehicle consists of a driver seated on the front left, a gunner and commander housed in the turret, as well as eight (8) additional troops housed at the rear and right-side of the vehicle. They exit/enter through an electrically-operated rear door ramp from the rear.
Fleet of AMX-10PAC-90 & AMX-10P in Indonesia
Even though its newer than the PT-76 & BTR-50s, the vehicle often sat in storage. This is mainly due to many different factors, but the primary one being that according to a source close to the Marine Corps, the vehicle doesn’t perform up to the expected standards. It’s said that the vehicle was prone to tipping over. The Procurement Plan of the New Order Era is mired with corruption, and as such usually the deal which fills the pocket of the government is the one they will go for, without the input of the branches receiving them. It could also stem from the different doctrine in which the Indonesian Marine Corps uses them compared to their French Counterparts.
Nevertheless, the AMX-10PAC-90 & the APC variant still appears from time-to-time, meanwhile the IFV hasn’t been seen for quite a long time. Only 1 known AMX-10P (Toucan II) remain, the vehicle is used as a static display/gate guardian at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Surabaya. It’s unclear exactly what happened to the rest of the AMX-10P IFV, considering from images there’s at least 5 units of them.
AMX-10P (Toucan II) now being used as a static display at the Marine Corps 2nd Cavalry Regiment Command Headquarters in Surabaya.
