It’s really only overpowered if it has to do with shooting down aircraft- hence why we still haven’t received the M114 20mm SPAAG or anything yet. Also why the F-15C currently is only receiving 4 of its 8 AMRAAMs. Also why the F-16A comes with stock 9Js, and the C with stock 9Ls, while the MiG-29 gets stock R-60Ms and Su-27 R-73s.
The R-60M is not a good missile at 12.7. I would much rather the AIM-9Ls or maybe even the Js.
I definitely agree, the time for ground launched ARH has come. As air vehicles get them I don’t see the reason why SPAA can’t. The NASAMS HML could’ve been added with the next major without any balance problems, but sadly it wasn’t. It could go to USA and Sweden (through Norway).
It wouldn’t be overpowered because the HML as a standalone vehicle has no search radar, and can only fire using the AMRAAM’s onboard radar. This limits range to ~16km, or as far as you can visually spot the aircraft.
That is 4km short of Pantsir, but 4km more than VT1 on Flarakrad and ItO 90. So definitely an improvenent over what Sweden/USA has, without breaking the scale.
As we are moving towards more modern vehicles and longer range missiles with “stand-off” capability, I could see Gaijin change their policy on “no separate radar” at some point. Otherwise western nations won’t have any SPAA as the vast majority are modular systems.
In case this rule changes we could see this, the Raytheon MPQ64F1 sentinel radar. Either as a trailer, or vehicle mounted. 120km range PD radar in X-band, compatible with NASAMS system. I believe the radar can be up to 25km away from the launcher.
This way the HML would have search capability and full use of it’s missile’s range, which is 25km and upward depending on variant
Here’s my ideas for implementation of the radar unit:
-
Radar is an offmap asset that is always there, or spawns at the same time as your vehicle. Located anywhere between 5 to 10km behind spawn zone. You control “your” radar unit as you normally would, just remotely.
-
Radar as “drone” vehicle. It spawns in alongside your SPAA and follows your commands. Follow, stay, move to designated grid square. You can control radar settings, switch search on or off etc.
-
Radar unit as player vehicle. You can link up with a fellow team or squad mate and share radar access by pressing a keybind. This could work similarly to the towing mechanic. Rewards for kills are shared.
Thoughts?
If gaijin wants they can add a towed radar on this spaa.
Yup! Here is the trailer!
Wouldn’t be too difficult I think, we already have a vehicle with trailer in-game (Churchill Crocodile)
Ability to drop the trailer would be nice
The R-60M is, with recent nerf to the 9L and it’s flare resistance, at the very least on par with it. Plus, the comparative aircraft to the MiG-29s it the F-16A w/ 9Js, not the 16C with 9Ls
And your joke about the 9J was funny. I too would much rather have a rear aspect missile without any flare resistance over an All Aspect missile with some flare resistance. Lol. That’s funny.
Plus, didn’t comment on the R-73 stock. Why Gaijin refuses to bring NATO to parity and give them 9Ms stock is beyond me
Would be cool to be able to disconnect it somewhere on the map when you spawn it and have it operated but if someone destroys the trailer you lose your radar.
Maybe u can move by driving it and controlling it just it can fixed on your build.
The R-60Ms range is my main issue
Ok, cool.
Regardless of this all, it is generally true that the US is not given it’s full potential (or even it’s equal potential) for fighting against aircraft. It would be wonderful to see this in game, as well as possibly the radar trailer. Would make a great new SPAAG and give me a reason to keep playing top tier USA.
The best part about that is the majority of western nations could get it in some way shape or form.
The ZSU-23-4M4 is massively undertiered right now. Iglas got stealth buffed a few months back on the ZSU-23-4M4 so that they pull immediately off the rails and now outperform the Stinger and Mistral at closer ranges.
Uh, just because it’s foldered doesn’t mean it’s unnecessary. It gets missiles to perform well at its BR.
The issue with it is not really the Iglas its just that the radar and the 23mm are just trash. Mostly the radar set it moves so slow and is extremely inaccurate. Give me some of what u have been smoking because you crazy.
The ZSU-23-4M4’s radar is bad, but it still gets 4 missiles with an instant pull that no other missile in the game gets - all at 9.3. Give me some of what you’ve been smoking.
They are caged so the missile is a trade off.
They have made it so that them being caged matters literally 0%:
It does matter when your trying to shoot down supersonic aircraft moving across your screen. Further it is infinitely worse than the Gepard 1A2.
