yes, they overperform compared to real life, most planes in this game do overperform as well because it’s a videogame. The Zero overperforms as well. Look where is it now. 5.0. The same thing goes for the F-5s, regardless how much they overperform they have not a single remark other than being good in sustained rate fights (not very meta tbh) and having easy to aim guns (which happen to deal the least damage per round than ANY gun beyond 15mm in this game. The planes themselves are average to good dogfighters, suffering in one circle engagements and tied to staying as fast as possible due to low speed thrust loss.
F-5s are anemic, lack weapons and rely on people to turn fight them in the easiest maneuver one can avoid which is the ratefight. How to avoid? Simply look behind after the merge and see where the f-5 is turning towards. Negate by cutting throttle and turning into it, dodge then go up and initiate an ascending spiral. The F-5 will now have worse thrust than you which will negatively impact it in the ability to follow you up or have enough energy retention to keep the airflow going and be able to nose it’s guns into you. It has two options now: disengage or stick to the spiral and wait for you to commit a mistake in the trajectory.
Option 1: it disengages: you’ll catch up . You’ll have more nose authority and cut into the f-5’s path with your gun if it tries to ratefight with you on your six.
Option 2: it persists the engagement, you eventually go more horizontal to make the f.-5 enter a status where it can’t ratefight anymore so you WILL eventually use your better thrust to outrate it for a short time before switching back to vertical and fall on top of it as it will now accelerate as slow as a mig17 because it lost all the thrust.
This goes to show that everything can’t be limited to “just a ratefight” and that even certain stuff outrate dedicated ratefighters at certain speeds and that ratefights can be easily negated as long as the engagement happens slightly above the ground, which in case of the opposite one simply does not engage as it has the extending privileges all f-5s lack.
The assorted F-5s in game happen to have very weak suspended armament as well. The F-5A series has two 10g missiles at a BR where everyone has four 20g missiles, the E Early has two 20g where the rest has six 30g’s or two radar guided missiles coupled to a doppler radar, or four standard radar missiles and four 20g’s. The F-5T series (SCU) has two god awful pythons at a BR where everyone else has either two undefeatable radar missiles and four long range flare resistant missiles or four IRCCM anti-flare missiles. The TCU is the insult of all F-5s, it has only one plinker instead of two, two dorbees
and two poothon 3 missiles at a BR where everyone else has… six R77s or two AMRAAMs and four IRCCM missiles on jets that instead of being just 100kmh faster are instead 500kmh faster AND also will outdogfight it clean under any circumstance.
All in all, it’s an overtiered jet because people just can’t cope with it cause they’re still on the “f5 op pls nerf” era but give it five more years like how they have been “zero op pls nerf” era for ten years up to today finally when people stopped turnfighting the zero.
If you’re a shortwing harrier or a turdnado and are tied against an f-5 then OK but i’m sorry if you’re in a mig21bis, a viggen or an f-4s and are still struggling for life against the slowest, worst armed, most niche fighter jet within the supersonic realm you suffer from a severe case of terminal skill issue. If you however think that third partying everyone and dying to an F-4S while you’re about to get your seventh kill assist is an engaging gameplay, i’m sorry again but you’d be a masochist.
Over and out.
