Hello everyone, and welcome to this new suggestion.

Today, I am presenting another submunition-dispensing weapon: a relatively obscure but very real French system, the Alkan 530 pod.

During the Cold War, several nations sought to develop weapons capable of engaging multiple targets over a wide area. This led to the development of various submunition systems, designed to disperse numerous smaller charges across a designated target zone.

France also developed and fielded several weapons of this type. While systems such as the BAT-100 and Bélouga are already well known, the French company Alkan, which specialized in aircraft-mounted dispensers, also developed a range of dedicated pods. Among them was the Alkan 530, the subject of this suggestion. The Alkan 530 is an aircraft-mounted dispenser designed to be carried beneath the wings or fuselage of compatible aircraft. It can be attached to standard NATO hardpoints and measures 2.23 meters in length, with a diameter of 340 mm.

There are few images showing this pod in use; however, its presence in French military stocks is confirmed by National Assembly Bill No. 2640 (official document cited below), which also notes that the pod was sold to the Argentine armed forces.

Unlike the larger Alkan 5030, the Alkan 530 carries a total of 40 cartridges, each measuring 74 mm in diameter. The pod can be loaded with either Type 314 ICM fragmentation submunitions or TDA-AT anti-tank submunitions, allowing its payload to be adapted to different ground-attack requirements.

  • Type 314 ICM submunition

The Type 314 ICM is a cylindrical high-explosive fragmentation submunition designed to engage personnel and other vulnerable targets over a wide area.

Upon detonation, the charge disperses approximately 3,200 fragments in a 360-degree pattern. Its estimated fragmentation radius is 20 meters, corresponding to a theoretical coverage area of approximately 1,256 square meters.

The submunition detonates between five and eight seconds after being ejected from the pod.

Technical specifications:
  • Dimensions: 210 × 70 mm
  • Weight: 3 kg
  • Effect: High-explosive fragmentation
  • Fragment count: Approximately 3,200
  • Fragmentation radius: 20 m
  • Detonation delay: 5–8 seconds after ejection
  • TDA-AT submunition

The TDA-AT is an anti-tank submunition designed to engage armored vehicles using a shaped-charge warhead.

After being released from the aircraft, the submunition deploys a parachute to slow its descent toward the target. Upon impact, its high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead detonates, providing a dedicated anti-armor capability.

While the Type 314 ICM is intended primarily for fragmentation effects, the TDA-AT configuration would make the Alkan 530 a more specialized option for engaging armored targets.

Technical specifications:
  • Dimensions: 274 × 74 mm
  • Weight: 2 kg
  • Warhead: High-explosive anti-tank (HEAT)
  • Deployment: Parachute-retarded descent
  • Detonation: Impact-fuzed

The Alkan 530 would be an interesting addition to the French aircraft arsenal once the cluster munitions are added in game, offering another way to deploy submunitions without relying on larger cluster bombs. Its relatively compact dimensions and capacity of 40 cartridges would distinguish it from the Alkan 5030, while the choice between fragmentation and anti-tank payloads would provide two different ground-attack options.

Would be interesting to see how useful these are in game.
