The Albatros C.III was a two seat fighter/attack aircraft used by the Imperial German Air Service during World War 1 on the Western Front.

History

The Albatros C.III was developed and produced by Albatros Flugeugwerke in 1915. It was an upgrade of the Albatros C.I where it received better responsiveness and agility compared. The C.III was fitted with forward facing and rear machine guns and up to 90kg of bombs could also be fitted.

The first of the C.III’s were deployed to the Western Front in December 1915 where it took on the roles of aerial reconnaissance, armed trainer, light bomber and bomber escort roles. It performed well in these roles which lead it to be manufactured by many factories leading it to be Albatros’s most produced two seat aircraft.

Due to it’s capability to fill many roles the C.III was used throughout the war with German forces up until the very final days of the war but by 1917 they were mostly assigned to secondary roles such as to training units. After the war’s end most C.III’s were destroyed but many were given to allied nations such as Poland and Finland which used their C.III’s as trainers. Poland kept some of their C.III’s as combat aircraft which saw combat during the Polish-Soviet War between 1919 and 1921.
