I love how people bring up this one time about the 9X like it says something about how effective it is lol. It’s almost like there are duds in everything lol.
its almost like peoples favorite missile wasn’t 100% effective against flares even if they wished it was
confirmation bias
Seems like youre the one whos most emotionally invested in this ngl
facts will be supported regardless of whether people like it or not
however to make up excuses and make up things is to be emotionally invested in fiction
Exactly!
When you’ve been using R-73 - the AIM-9M is a culture shock. It really does fit a different playstyle.
Ah, makes sense.
yea i dont play soviet kit very often and that’s only for ground. I know the R73 is very good as I’ve died to them more than the 9M I just cant really say how the act from using them myself.
for some reason now using the methods to flare aim9m’s no longer work (shut burner off, burst some flares, move to the opposite direction), the missile still tracks you despite having in theory the seeker in blind mode.
Anyone know what the 9M does if it sees an enemy misisle.after lauch
Im guessing the seaker shuts off permanently or it always follows the missile.
Im seeing 9ms miss everything even under 2km direct 6 and this is the only common factor
it doesnt register the missile as a flare so the seeker does not shut off
however normally the aim 9m will switch targets to the missile
Makes sense. Thanks
now it’s become practically unflareable under most scenarios, but it still keeps going downwards hitting the ground if launched below 100 meters above the ground.
unflarable? My 9Ms get defeated with 2 flares fired from a jet that isnt even paying attention to me.
9M is the single worst IR missile at top tier by a mile. If I could leave all my 9Ms in the hangar and steal just ONE magic 2 from my Mirage, and take that instead. I would do that 1000000000% of the time.
If they tested and recognized this flaw on the aim-9P would they not have then accounted for it in further development of missiles?
As if they haven’t been improving the best they can
As if who hasn’t been improving? If the Americans addressed the issue with it being thrown off by dirty flares and all other kinds of flares then they likely would start testing it against every type of flare heat sig and size they can produce, meaning dirty flares of any kind wouldn’t be effective anymore and if the Russians stopped making dirty flares and produced normal flares then this goal would become even easier for the Americans to accomplish. Not to mention dirty flares or not it doesn’t really affect how modern missiles maintain a track on targets.
DOD has entire programs and pencil pushers devoted to deficiencies in equipment.
Some failure on 1980s equipment against a major opponent would have been baseline fix requirement for a next gen or even variants. The AIM-9P-5 added improved IRCCM from the AIM-9M for a reason.
The AIM-9x failure for sure had entire teams devoted to understanding that scenario. Just like any jet crash.
you are already starting with the assumption the missile failed, which is a possibility, just one not supported byt the course of events, this has already be argued above, no point in continuing this.
aim9 p-5 and aim9x are completely unrelated and rely on vastly different tecnologies. something that affects an ircm IR missile will not affect a IIR missile in the same manner or at all. “dirty flares” are still just balls of heat just inconstant balls of heat, IIR doesnt care.
That was my point towards him.
9M is mid honestly id take R73 or AAM3 or magic 2 or PL8B its just mid all its good for is long range stealth shots
