Is it me or Aim-7F(M) combo with the western PD an nightmare to play?
I do not have many Eastern planes yet, but I have many Western planes.
The Aim-7F uniquely “go bad” unlike any other missiles I have used. Not Aim-7E, not Aim-7E-2(DF), not R-24R, not R-27R (with Bison PD radar), not Super 530F (yes, THAT horrible missile at 12.0!).
With pulse radar, the radar could lose signal or lock onto a chaff, yet the missile would keep going.
For the Aim-7F, I would fire a missile, then the target does a slight notch, my radar begins to lose signal (but not completely unlock). That is enough for the missile to go dumb and haywire. Haywiring includes “bouncing” and just flying mindlessly into nowhere.
This behavior is especially noticable in the F-20A, with a super easy to notch radar.
I’ve encountered similar situations with the Phantom FGR2/FG1 and the Skyflash DF (which Iirc is the Aim-7F-ish equivalent) when fired using PDV and not SRC mode on the radar. Feels like sometimes it just… misses. Not an aircraft I play enough though to get a good data set though but I do want to “investigate” the issues more in the future though If I can be bothered. But yeah, I’ve experienced times where trying to guide the “early-ish” SARH missiles on PD just doesnt seem to be all that reliable
No, I’ve literally had Skyflashes miss targets flying in straight line towards me at altitude (so no MP) and I couldnt see any CMs being dropped (this was before the split CM controls as well, so unless they were running pure chaff, I would have seen flares) and even then, the chaff should do nothing when behind the target and the lock is still on PDV, Notch + chaff works because it forces the radar into SRC mode that then is defeated by Chaff, PDV should ignore chaff, so if PDV is being defeated by Chaff, something is broken
ive been having bunch of matches with these missiles lately and while theyre reliable enough for me they do have times where they glitch for no reason and dive into ground or some other shit. you cant fix a missile glitch with skill. i think gaijin was earlier asking for replays of these incidents because they recognized it as problematic.
If PD/PDV modes are being affected by chaff. Then there is an issue, they should not be. Likewise there might be an issue if PD/PDV radars are swapping to SRC too early.
If SARH missiles are not guiding correctly on PD/PDV then there is an issue (I suspect there might be an issue)
The main advantage of PD/PDV radars should be low altitude engagement but MP eliminates this.
In aircraft like the FGR2, too many times have I had PDV just straight up fail to guide a Skyflash correctly or the target just hugged the deck and the missile was defeated that way. I generally just sit high and use the SRC radar if I ever play it in Sim. Eliminates both issues
nope, i do understand when multipathing happens and it is expected however a target that is high in the sky may sometimes cause my missile to go dumb and hit the ground or veer off to the sides turning in a random direction, not following the clear head on target at all.
i do consider my launches to be proper, most of the time im able to have the missile hit apart from these random glitches. ill record it next time it happens so we can make a conclusion together.
It has a far better radar than most for the BR. I’ve never had any issues in the F3, only the relatively basic PDV radar in the FGR2/FG1. OP may be talking about the same or similar radar probably on a Phantom
Edit just checked, if OP is talking about firing Aim-7Fs from the F4J then it has the same radar as the FGR2. The AN/APG-59. So it could be an issue with that radar specifically. He does also mention the F-20, which is a different radar, but if that radar is being notched too easily then that is another issue. Especially for the BR
That happens for most SARH missiles, goes for random targets, same situation when ur lock goes mad and goes to a random place, but for missiles. I do have an example where it actually hits an enemy aircraft but yeah, does happen, don’t think this is what actually he is talking about, cause it seems to me to be a HDN PDV exclusive thing.
