What types of targets should have ability to be tracked by main caliber guns?
  • Only Naval targets
  • Air and Naval targets
  • Chose “No” in the poll above

Players in Naval used to be able to mark any target with X+1, and while using secondary calibers, main calibers would automatically fire at the enemy. Then Gaijin disabled this feature for Bluewater ships. Due to the very low efficiency when firing at ships, and perhaps the excessive anti-aircraft capabilities with HEVT shells, this decision is reasonable.

However, it would be very useful to add the ability to track an enemy ship while switching to your secondary guns, anti-aircraft guns or hydroplane, as the main caliber guns stay in the last position and when you switch back to them you have to re-target them. This can be frustrating on ships with slow turrets.

So I suggest adding the ability for Bluewater ships to track enemy’s ship by main caliber guns when you switch to the secondary/AA caliber or hydroplane using the next algorithm:

  1. Lock-on the naval target.
  2. Press shortcut to enable automatic tracking. Considering X+1 by default, like an automatic fire by secondary/AA calibers pressing X+2/3.
  3. When a player switches to secondary/AA caliber or hydroplane, main calibers begin to track the previously marked target.
  4. If the target contact is lost (player can’t lock-on the target), main caliber guns stop to track it. Though, marking itself won’t disappear, and when locking-on will be available again, guns will begin to track the target again (mechanic of auto-fire by secondary/AA caliber works in the same way).

Maybe you can ask me why I don’t suggest tracking air targets too. I don’t really see it reasonable, because usually ships with good anti-aircraft capabilities of their main caliber guns have fast turret rotation speed, and in most cases players don’t need to track air target while using their secondary/AA gun or hydroplane (I don’t really remember ships with universal main calibers and hydroplane simultaneously). But I’ve added such option in the poll too.

I don’t usually have reason to switch to secondaries/AA but this would be pretty good for people who unbinds their main guns from their secondaries and need to personally man the secondaries against some pesky targets.
